I've got a quick question about programmers. Several of them state that they delete the EGR system without removing any parts. Does this mean that my truck won't ever go into it exhaust cleaning cycle/regen? If so, does the particulate filter just continue to fill up the honeycomb until it lets the exhaust blow through it as if it wasn't there at all? It just seems odd to me that you can turn off a system that has a filter in it and not have to worry about the filter needing changed, or cleaned or something.
How does this work?
I absolutely love my truck, but hate that stupid exhaust system! Once it is out of warranty, it's gone. But I've only got 20,000 so that will still be a while. For now if I can just make the computer act like it isn't there so my truck doesn't dump fuel into the exhaust to incinerate the carbon build up, I'll be happy!
The egr and dpf are two completely different systems on the truck. The exhaust which you are referring to is the dpf. Most tuners will come with dpf on/off tunes. To run a dpf off tune, you must be deleted. If not your dpf would over time clog and continuously run in regen. With a dpf off tune this eliminates the regen and with the exception of sct will eliminate the exhaust sensors.
Programmers will also disable rather than delete the egr system. Most will have an egr on/off option or a specific egr delete tune. Spartans tunes from 250 and up do not cycle the egr valve IIRC. Overtime though this will cause a build up of carbon in the egr valve and cause it to stick. You can however run a lower tune that cycles the egr once in a while (or in general) to keep the egr valve functional. Most however end up deleting the egr valve and coolers. A large number of engine failures have been egr cooler related on the 6.4's due to cracked/leaking coolers. IMO this system is not worth having on the truck. The exhaust/tuning on the truck from the factory is down right terrible. With a simple intake, programmer, and exhaust it's literally a night and day difference in the truck.
The EGR is the Exhaust Gas Re-circulator, it is totally different than what you are talking about. The DPF, Diesel Particulate Filter.
A lot of programmers don't allow the EGR valve to open so exhaust gasses aren't being pulled into the intake along with air. Thats what the programmers are advertising. This has nothing to do with the DPF and regen. If you run an "on road" tune with the DPF still on the truck, it will still go into regen to clean the DPF.
Got it! Thanks for the education. This really helped. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to wait until the warranty is up before I get rid of that stupid DPF.
My truck is currently trying to clean the DPF and I just haven't had the time to go for a completetly pointless drive for who knows how long until it's clean. Nor do I feel like burning expensive fuel just to make the environment happy. **end rant**
The dealer told me that there should be a message that comes up that says it's clean... I'm not sure I've ever seen this message. Have any of you?
They also said that they can do a manual regen. Is this something that I can do at home?
Yes, the regen is a pain!!! There is no message that will come up saying it is clean. There is a message that will appear for 3-5 seconds telling you "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" and that is it. Most of the time I know mine is doing it because there is a slight change in exhaust note.
They can do a manual regen, and no you can't do one on your own that I know of.
The dealer would probably have to do a manual re-gen. I know what you're saying about the driving around to clean the exhaust filter but if you keep interrupting the process when it is happening and not letting it finish you will eventually have even more issues. Not trying to knock what you are saying but just a couple words of advice.
How long do you guys have to typically drive to get the engine to finish its regen cycle? Is there a minimum speed to maintain? I guess I'll go for a drive tomorrow... darn.
minimum driving speed on regen is 30 mph, it will let you idle for a bit but i think anything over 5 minutes and it kicks the regen out and you have to start over again. It is a pain, but it is best to go to a dealership and get a manual regen or to go for a cruise. I take short trips back and forth through town and i ended up getting stuck in a 3 day regen do to it kicking out and starting over again, it ended up dumping three quarts of diesel fuel in my crank case and now my truck is sitting at the dealership with a list of problems! So go for a half hour cruise, you dont have to rip and rare just keep her at thirty or above and let her do her thing
A couple extra gallons of diesel fuel is better than your truck sitting at the shop for over a week, and in my case my warranty just expired last month, so it aint going to be a cheap fix
yes a dpf and egr delete and you have absolutely none of this
