had a trans built with a bunch of custom machine work and HSS parts, triple disc converter, .427 line pressure valve, valve body work, etc. because my old trans just had a bad slipping problem with the tune. lots of shift flare and super slow shifts. seen here and here. those aren’t actually to bad, it’s much worse with a load or uphill.
bought the new trans, super reputable guy, been doing e4od and 4r100 work for a decade, gave me a trans rated for 600hp with firm shifts as i requested. he understood what i wanted, i told him i didn’t want any slow rolling shifts, i just want it to grab the next gear no question, just click and that’s it and he said yes. he told me this trans would be as firm as it gets with daily driving, and if i ever got sick of it to just let him know and he will turn it down.
ok beautiful, i got this trans, installed it into the truck, did his filling procedure, adjusted shift linkage to make sure the trans would FULLY go into gear and not be half in half out, went for a drive on the STOCK “factory” tune, and it shifted ok. not really any harder than the other trans in stock tune. cool so i switched the hydra to “65hp daily driver with modified valve body” and it was the exact same way as it used to be. super slow shifts, shift flare, etc. fantastic. brand new trans and issue is not fixed. for the hell of it, i still had old tunes for my old trans “without modified valve body”, so i switched it to them, and nothing changed. not any harder at all. i expected harder shifts becuase with the “modified valve body” tunes it has no trans tuning, no elevated line pressure, nothing. without the modified valve body, the tune elevates the line pressure for firmer shifts.
alright. so i did some diagnosing. went over to my buddy’s house and tried his pcm (part of the dpc-202 family like mine) except his was a NAW6, mines a TDE1. no problem there, i just took his pcm, plugged MY hydra in and put it into my truck WITH MY TDE1 TUNES. at first i tried it stock, no tune selected, made no difference. tried all the tunes as i did before on my PCM, same damn thing. we took my buddies pcm back out of my truck, and installed his pcm with my chip in his truck and his had the same problem, shift flare, etc. so i took my pcm, installed it into my truck WITHOUT THE CHIP INSTALLED and it just drove like normal just like at first when i said it didnt really shift any harder than my old trans. 2-3 shift seems slow as well seen here in this video
we can see that the pattern is 1-2, tc lockup, 2-3, 3-4. 1-2 is fine, tc locks good, but 2 rolls into 3 still, and 3-4 has a mini shift flare if you listen carefully.
so could it be the tune? i’m at a loss for words and don’t know what to do. i don’t understand what is going on and why my truck isn’t just shifting firm like it should be. pcm is checked, trans is replaced… maybe the hydra fried my pcm and then fried my buddies pcm right away? and thats why they both flare ?
