Well my brother and i are looking for something that we can share that gets good fuel economy. He drives a 06 6.0 that gets about 14, and my 7.3 gets 13 in the winter and 17 in the summer around town. We are wanting to get something that is reliable, gets 20+ mpg's around town, and can still be a workhorse.

We have 2 options for a vehicle. We have a 1990 F-250 2wd standard cab, completely base truck, 4.10 gears, C-6 auto behind a 300 I-6. The truck has about 176k miles, and our dad has owned it since it was new. Its a work truck, always has been and always will be. The frame is super clean for being a 21 year old work truck, and the bed is just starting to rust. Overall the truck is in great shape. It weighed in at 4980 on the scales at the shredder after i unloaded, and i have a bunch of crap in the toolbox.(prolly 1-200lbs

Our ideas for that truck is to put a manual in it, and some tall gears. For a motor i have a 99 7.3 that we were told ran great, and only has 114k miles out of a bus. I bought it for injectors and the HPOP system, and its now sitting in the corner of the shop. We can also get our hands on a DT360 or DT466 fairly cheap. We we have also talked about a 4bt/6bt but we don't really want to do that.

Or the second vehicle would be a 80's to 90's 4wd extended cab Ranger. Once i get some more cash i'm gonna be on the hunt for one just cause i need something soon with decent economy, and i want a Ranger to toy around in. My plan for a Ranger would be to stuff a 4BT in there, with a 5/6 speed, and 3.73(maybe taller gears) in it.

So what do you guys thinks would be better? A light 2wd F-250 with a 7.3/DT360/DT466 and fairly tall gears, or a 4wd Ranger with a 4BT. We are just kinda tossing the idea of these around, so i'm open to opinions and suggestions.

If you have a 7.3 and you want more mpg's why would you get another one?

a 2wd manual 7.3 will easily get 21-23 mpg.

Because if i got another one it would be a light weight 5 speed 2wd truck. That should be able to get killer fuel mileage while being a fun street truck.

The lowest cost option is to make that 7.3 work in the old F-250. You already have most of the money sunk in it. If you can make the engine work, put a NV4500 or ZF6-650 behind it and get some 3.31 gears (3.08s aren’t available anymore).

If you can’t make the 7.3 run, get a 4BT3.9. You said 20+ in town. OK. You have to keep the weight down. The 4BT3.9 doesn’t weigh but maybe a hundred pounds more the 300 I-6 gas hog. A six-cylinder Cummins or a V-8 international buys you more HP (more road speed) but that is a death sentence for good MPG.

To get good MPG, you want to keep engine RPM as low as possible. These engines are not lugging at 1000 RPM unless you have a substantial load.

The Ranger with a 4BT3.9 or Benz OM617 (an engineering project) will give the best MPG.

No matter the engine. If you want MPG, avoid the automatic.

Once you get her rolling, pay attention to your aerodynamics.
