NEED HELP WITH SOME ISSUES

ok tranny guru's, ive been having some issues w/ my tranny and need your help/opinions..

truck is a 96 f350 cclb 4x4 E4OD 3.55 gears, lately it has had some shifting issues at random.

--some times when leaving a stop, the rpms go up and then it SLAMS into 2nd, then the OD light will flash.. As i keep driving the OD light will stop flashing but when i slow down to a stop or almost a stop, and start accelerating it feels like the TC is locked up and it shifts quickly. it will do this till i shut the truck off and restart it.

--other times while on the highway or just a fast rd, the TC will unlock. sometimes it wont relock till i slow down.

-- today was a new one... while driving about 50mph i had the OD off (3.55 gears) i started pushing on the pedel and speeding up quickly. then it felt like the TC unlocked then relocked. OD light started flashing and once i stopped and started going again it felt like the TC was locked up and shifted quickly...

things i replaced--VSS and TPS

fluid level is good ,, color is good ,,smell is good.

codes ive gotten P1783, P0344, P0236 and P0500....

thanks in advance..

The P0500 code is telling you there is something wrong with the vehicle speed signal. It could be the sensor or the wiring. This MUST be fixed to make this work again.
It's a new sensor from ford. I'll trace wires
Good thing to check....I've a 96 7.3 also and while the Overdrive light has never come on, I usually have to manipulate the accelerator pedal, eg let up on it, to shift into 2nd and 3rd, and it shifts pretty hard.....with 300+k on this transmission, is it OK to change the fluid/filter? I've been told that to do so can cause the clutch plates to go south.
Its the speedometer (psom). .the microprocessor are terrible in the speedometer as long as it has a digital odometer. They are famous for going out. Had to do it on both my trucks. Sometimes it would shift great sometimes it wouldn't. The microprocessor reads how fast the truck is going from the vss and then communicates with the computer on when to shift. The truck doesn't know how fast its going then trans goes into limp mode to not damage itself. Really hard shifts and at wrong rpm's?

I wouldn't say it shifts at the wrong time but it does sometimes from 1st to 2nd...

I have 2 gauge clusters, I'll try swapping the speedometer
let me know if it works. Took me months to track it down the first time. 2 trans shops no codes then i found it to be the speeometer. I also found that if the speedometer dosent jump around while driving the vss is ok and good sig is making it to the cluster.
The digital odometer issue makes perfect sense.....when I was getting ready to "roll" over to 400,000 I pulled over to the side of the road at 399,999.9 (west Texas, VERY little traffic), set up my camera phone to video the event AND IT REVERTED TO 300,000!!! The good news is I now have a low miliage 7.3 ;).....Thanks all for the rapid and insightful response.
