You should think about it Andrew. It will be a good education for you, and I promise you will not regret it.

Yep, and the memories, great, good, bad, and horror. I served my four and left, had great offers to re-up. Not for me. Would I do it over again. In a heartbeat.

I have a few friends that are Marines I have heard the stories one of them was a recon marine for 8 years three tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan he is built like a tank. My other friend never went to Iraq but was stationed on a ship for awhile he said the beds were way to small and he is 6'0" I am 6'5" so that wouldn't work out well.

I would love to serve but I dont think dying for Iraqis is very patriotic ;)
I was thinking about joining the coast guard :D

Also its pretty cool the recon marine (Sgt Rudy Reyes) that is good friends with my family got casted to be a lead character in a HBO mini series being filmed in South Africa.

Here are some pics he is on the right in the 1st pic

there so many other jobs that wont get you on the front lines of a war like ever one thinks. My advice is get a job in the military that you can use on the outside world. (IE fishinfool diesel mec. Me rigging airplanes.) neither one of those jobs will ever go away and you get great training and on the job expersines in the military.

Spent twenty with 10 (1970 to 1984) on ships and made 1 med, and 4 WestPacs and have made port visits to just about every place except Baharin, and Shanghai. Some of the more obtuse and not avail or less visited are:

Bandar Abas, Iran
Berberra, Somalia
Colombo, Ceylon now Sri Lanka
Pusan, Korea
Diego Garcia
Isle of Roderique (just to drop off Coconuts ... don't ask looooong story)
Martinique
Midway
Kwajalein
Subic Bay
Malta.

I've also sailed around the world longitude wise except for the Red Sea portion between 33.31 and 40.1 ... from the middle of the Black Sea thru the Panama Canal and been in 5 of the 7 seas (only have missed the Red and Caspian) including the Sea of Okosk.

Two of the more memorable events were when we were on our way to the Black Sea and were ordered to pull into Athens and put our Motor Whale Boat over to receive passengers. Who came aboard for our trip into the Black Sea was Adm. Stansfield Turner who was Com Sixth Feet at the time and like 3 O6s and a couple of O5s and one or two enlisted. Now this was on a WWII Fram Destroyer and we already had an O6 DesDiv and staff embarked. :pointlaugh: The other was spending two weeks at Diego Garcia getting screwed by the crew of the Tender Dixie. We actually had the prop on our 1052 flown in by C-5 and replaced waterborne. Enterprising folks has bumper stickers made up in Singapore that said "We were screwed by Dixie in the waters of Diego Garcia" or something like that. :gayfight:
