i derned sure won't do that again, that's for sure :doh: ! i told her to downshift from 5th to 4th and she tried to put it in reverse!!! it grinded for about 3 seconds before she actually heard me yelling, "PUT IT IN NEUTRAL!!!!!". so now if i don't put it in 1st gear before putting it in reverse it will pop out of reverse and grind on the gear until i put it back in neutral. does this mean my reverse synchronizer is out? what else could be wrong with it?

I had this happen on a Ranger one time. The synchros were "bound up" for lack of a better description.

I was stuck and shifting from 1st to R back and forth hard.

It would not even stay in R if I didn't hold it in, very tightly, and if I gave it too much throttle it would pop out.

One day in the driveway I coaxed and coaxed and coaxed it in reverse and it began to hold more and more throttle without popping out. Then it eventually went back to its old self.

I don't know if that will help you or not, but it fixed mine from popping out.

Maybe I am lucky, wife does not want to drive my truck. She did once up in Big Bear, snowing, me with a dislocated shoulder, her driving home. I told her she needed to go slow in the turns because a pick up is light in the rear, not like a car. I kept telling her but she would not slow down, until we spun out. You can imagine I was quite angry in all my pain. Fortunitally we made it home. However I drove the last 30 miles of mounatin road to get home because I did not trust her. She has not driven my truck since by her own choosing. :doh:

Most reverse in manual transmissions have no sychros. They weren't made to shift from forward to reverse in motion-so no need to sychro. Might have lost some metal or burred the ends of the gear teeth. Hopefully they will mesh in time like gregrobs. They should if burred a little.

Sorry to hear about your truck travis, hope it straightens it self out.

I guess I'm lucky. My wife used to drive big gas company trucks during the summers in ohio working for her dads company. I still don't really like letting her drive it but I trust her. There's a total of about 3 people other than me that I have or would ever let drive my truck. My dad... used to drive semi's, my wife and one of my friends.

well. it hasn't popped out of gear for 2 days. but everytime that the girlfriend is in the truck i make sure to put it in first then in reverse about 4 or 5 times, then she gets all mad and says, " if i messed your truck up just tell me!!!!!!" i think it's funny to get her all flustered so i told her "ok, you f***** my truck up!!! do you want to pay for it since you messed it up?" haha "no, your the one who let me drive, you can pay for it." i guess that's just how it goes. i'll keep drivin' it and keep puttin' it in first before backing up. oh and just to let y'all know, that's the last time i try to teach someone how to drive a manual tranny using my truck as the dummy.

I remember when I used to be right. That was pre-marriage.

I let my wife drive the truck while I took a nap - too scared to stay awake while she drives... I woke up to find a nice big chip out of the windshield. She told me she was staying real close so the semi-trucks so the rocks don't hit the truck with as much speed oke: What ever happened to common sense???

Thats fine my wife "wore the high spots" off the ole 92 IDIs clutch (5spd) and said something "smelled funny" Did a burnout pulling my truck (our truck :blah: right) up at our local truck club meeting. But she wont drive it drive it, she said it makes her chest hurt when I floor it. thats great a truck that causes physical pain! Wait till the 2s go in! I hear ya brother I nap when my woman drives too!

:hehe::hehe::hehe: I have 30yrs of truckin time - it's called experience - most woman don't usually get into drivin trucks much - hence the
" lack of experience " will lead to fu#k-ups. Good or bad, that's just the way I see it.
( My daughter took her drivers test in a truck - with a clutch and passed it!)
Da#n, must run in the family.. CatKid was just starting to learn the clutch when the truck broke - might have saved me from another neck brace..

Tell her there are "other" ways to pay for it. I wont let my wife drive my truck without me since I found out she was racing every other truck she could reel in. Even when im with her I cant sleep because when I wake up she is usualy doing around 90 that girl has a heavy foot.
