I popped a few pics here to view, but look at the full album at webshots http://community.webshots.com/album/560880364PGDPSE

Kenny blew a head gasket, but we found some interesting stuff. Head gasket blew on #7, but was ready to go in two other spots. When gasket went, the steel seal ring must have dropped into piston and chipped the piston.

When we tore the oil pan off we found somethings none of us had seen before. Take a look at the heat effected arfeas on crank.

And then there is the set of ceramic coated uppies that have less than a hundred miles on them.

Like I said, just goo look thru the whole album http://community.webshots.com/album/560880364PGDPSE

Did the main caps walk and load the crank fillets? What do the main bearings look like?

Was that engine rebuilt before, crank surfaced or polished?

Thanks for getting the pics up Nigel.

Greg, thats what I'm trying to figure out. Dont know if that's when the crank is made or heat from my engine. Its only on the crank, none of the bearings are like that and now that I'm thinking about it the bearings should be the same way if not worse then the crank.

The bearings may have faired much better than the crank if the heat was generated by the crank walking due to either main cap alignment issues or too much thrust bearing clearance and the crank fillets were generating the heat.

Generally you will not see heat marks like that from the original machine work unless something went wrong, is this the first time the bottom end has been apart?

What do the thrust surfaces look like the big end of the rod?

Yep first time, I did buy the truck used but dont think the engine was ever pulled apart. The previous owner worked for the Ford dealership I got it from.

I bet you'll find fretting between the main cap and block when you pull it apart. A lot of heat generated there when the crank walked forward and tried twisting the caps off the block.

Did you ever have any oil samples taken and sent to a lab?

LOL. We could move the crank about 1/16" back and forth!! 0.062" I guess that would be out of spec!!

correct rod info -

1/16"? Ya, that's a thou or so out of spec :lookaround:

Oh well, no big deal. If you had done a few samples it might indicate whether the heat marks on the crank were the result of crappy factory machine work and assembly or if it is a more recent problem that came along with the increased HP.

All over but the crying now  Should be a 250K + miles engine once you get it back together will all the good parts.

Now that's some real CARNAGE. Hate when that happens.

Kenny,

I think you will find that is not heat damage on the crank ;)

I believe it is from the original turning and hardening of the rod journals. Every PSD crank I have seen (and that is quite a few) has those heat signatures. Even new ones.

I have 2 cranks in my basement right now that look exactly like that. ;)
