Long story short I have been quoted a price of 1450 + shipping on a brand new GT4202R OIL COOLED turbo…Sales rep tells me its just been released. David is doing some homework on his end… trying to do some on my end also. Anyone heard about this one yet.

Note: This is oil cooled not the water cooled version!!!

If you've got the means, go ahead and snag that charger man. A GT42R with the 96lb wheel at 1400ish dollars....

That is a deal. Just make sure it's got the 96lb wheel.

I talked with Garrett this afternoon about this turbo and it was suggested to not use this version of the GT42R in a performance application, while it is technically a GT42R it is not the exact same thing we have been using. The 2 differences are in the lack of water cooling passages and the way the compressor wheel mounts.
The real GT42R as we know it uses a shaft that the compressor wheel threads onto the length of the shaft. The oil cooled or cheaper version uses a short threaded stub that sticks out a short amount then the non thru bore compressor wheel attaches to it.

Can you give me a bit more on why I should not run it? I really can't see there being issues...or am I missing a bigger picture here? Are they water cooling the CS because oil can't keep up with the heat? IDK just want an in depth reason if you don’t mind.

Not sure on exactly what differences there are in this particular case, but typically water cooled turbo's are used in very high heat applications. Frequently you will find them in off-road equipment where the engine compartments are completely sealed and ambient temperatures are very high.

In this case there may be differences in the parts used in the turbo. I don't think a PSD will get hot enough underhood temps to cause a problem with that turbo, but it's possible.

The TN's are oil cooled. As well as the big turbos on the market that utilize the hypermax mounting systems. I have not herd of any problems with those units melting down because of only oil cooling. I agree with Devil, I must be missing something as well. Oh Wizard, please enlighten us.

And Dave, that is not a personal shot, I just want to know what my dumb ass is missing here.
