Jax' 99 F350 7.3L Truck rebuild . . . .

Greetings, all;

I have been looking for a HD - any make - to pull a bigger travel trailer but all I find is a lot of people too super-proud of their vehicles with 200k+ mileage. Therefore, I bought this to build my own - the engine is a literal basket case...

1999 FORD F-350 SD LARIAT Ext Cab LWB 2WD
7.3L V8 OHV 16V Powerstroke . . . Orig mileage 245083
5 speed 6 speed manual transmission

I want to build the entire power train - I suspect the rear is not limited slip - and want to fix everything Ford did not do right when it was built. I want to make it as efficient as possible in AZ's 120F heat to the northern regions.

I have rebuilt small block chevys, two motorcycle engines, but this is my first time on Ford and rebuilding a diesel (although I have worked on them).

Thank you all for all the wisdom posted on this website.

Best recommendations for aftermarket upgrades?

Well, fudge. Transmission is dropped, but how to get out from under the truck?
????

Just a word of caution, any exhaust related fasteners, I highly recommend a healthy coat of anti seize.

Hey Jax, on your heat shield, Ford might accidentally still offer that. Not sure.

The Home Depot stuff CJ suggested is a good option.

Hey @Dustybumpers what do you think, didn't you do one recently?

Sorry, he's looking to re-do the heat shield on the firewall while the engine is out.

Please excuse my faux pas.......

Hauling a travel trailer. Shouldn't work it at all. I'm going with the Insight CST 2.
Just my unsolicited 2 cents, the Edge CS2 I recently installed has been a pain, I still like it, but it requires some fiddling. Just FYI.

For the back sides I use oven cleaner and a scotch brite pad. As Dustybumpers said, wear gloves. Don't get the oven cleaner on the shiny side.

Not sure if it's a shadow or I'm seeing a 4x4 front end there.......

If you don't mind me asking, are you Sheriff's Dept or Border Patrol?

I installed a 6637 on my 97, I really like the big paper filter for running around out in the dust, which I'm sure you can relate to. Around here in the summer the dust is like flour.

Obviously the parts for mine were different from yours, but here is a link to a website, and a couple of screenshots of part numbers, for a 99. Early/ late 99's may use a different hose, I don't know what you have.

The bracket would be ordered separately, I used one on my OBS, I don't like the filter rattling around on the inner fender. Do some measuring and maybe search the forum for ideas on fitment in a super duty.

And you can get a snazzy colored wrap!! Lol

Just an idea I'm throwing out on the wires, air bag system? Maybe the impact sensor for the right front?

Again, zero experience with that part of a super duty, but looked familiar.

I kinda like those little jacks, they don't leak off. Not for changing tires of course but they are handy as frame spreaders, or holding a transmission up while you put off the project until next weekend......

Wheels are looking good.

Factory jack is still there for back up. I carry a low profile 12 ton bottle jack,( harbor freight) and an assortment of blocks. And a high lift.

In some situations I've used the screw type factory jack as a stand to get another bite with the bottle jack, but that often involved an overloaded horse trailer and u bolt grooves in pavement.

I fail to understand the need for an aftermarket air filter. The factory setup works more than well enough, unless you plan on big power. But, thats not my place to decide.
Just venturing a guess, but I'm betting the absence of the stock unit has some bearing on the matter.

They are going to be in the tank on the bottom.

Ok, I am in a pissy mood right now about the flood of money I am/have/will sink into my obs that's turning the final chapter in its rodstoration.

My wife reminds me.

New trucks of this caliber cost 60-90 THOUSAND dollars, and require a $600-900 MONTHLY PAYMENT

You may have $20 000 in the truck when it's MOSTLY done, but you will have a better truck, and YOU built it

Think about that.

And there are a lot of people here ready and willing to help you make that happen. They sure have helped me

I have to add something to that, don't forget to factor in the dependability issue. These new trucks are so complicated, troubles are inevitable. And even simple maintenance is outrageous.

And Dustybumpers is absolutely right!!
