Jax' 99 F350 7.3L Truck rebuild . . . .

134247 Views 4072 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  Jax
Greetings, all;

I have been looking for a HD - any make - to pull a bigger travel trailer but all I find is a lot of people too super-proud of their vehicles with 200k+ mileage. Therefore, I bought this to build my own - the engine is a literal basket case...

1999 FORD F-350 SD LARIAT Ext Cab LWB 2WD
7.3L V8 OHV 16V Powerstroke . . . Orig mileage 245083
5 speed 6 speed manual transmission

I want to build the entire power train - I suspect the rear is not limited slip - and want to fix everything Ford did not do right when it was built. I want to make it as efficient as possible in AZ's 120F heat to the northern regions.

I have rebuilt small block chevys, two motorcycle engines, but this is my first time on Ford and rebuilding a diesel (although I have worked on them).

Thank you all for all the wisdom posted on this website.

Best recommendations for aftermarket upgrades?

Well, Dang it! It WAS a K&N filter. I do not know why people like those. Too many people don't take care of cleaning and oiling the filter. So, like mine, it was a black, muddy, mess.

But, I do have the battery installed.

Is there normally a battery box on the right side?
no. just the tray.
the reason for the box on driver side is because the air inlet is built into it.

Holy quintet posts, try an beat that tom. @tjctransport
nope, not even gonna try. since the new format started, i have not had a double post.................yet.
I fail to understand the need for an aftermarket air filter. The factory setup works more than well enough, unless you plan on big power. But, thats not my place to decide.
because the K&N costs more, so it has to be a better filter. (y)

Just venturing a guess, but I'm betting the absence of the stock unit has some bearing on the matter.

part of the reason i went with the 6637. my air box was all busted up and basically there was no filtering action due to the busted box.
plus with the cover the filters last forever.

That is good to know!

Absolutely . . . And I read on the forums that a lot of people "upgraded" their filters. But if the stock one is good. . . .

I don't find anything about the K&N that makes it worth while. And until yesterday, I didn't even KNOW I had the stock filter cover. However, more surface are on a good filter means better flow.

So, I take it your consensus is that the stock air filter is a good filter and -- barring HeavyDoc's love of sound -- there is no reason to change it out?
for a stock truck, the stock filter will supply more air than the engine will ever need.
and i consider a truck with a mild tuner and upgraded exhaust still stock.
the 6637 is equal to the stock pancake filter for air inlet, they both use 4 inch inlet to the turbo. it just has a larger filter media surface area so it does not get as dirty as quick.
and like i said, if yo use a cover on the 6637 it stays clean forever.
i change the cover every 6 months and replace it with the clean one. the last filter was 9 years old when i changed it and it was still clean as the new one. i put it on my 88 and put the new one on the 02.

that is the intercooler. it takes hot air from the turbo and cools it down before sending it into the intake manifold.
trans cooler is in the bottom of the radiator if you have an automatic trans. manual trans does not have a trans cooler.
well, first post said 5 speed trans.
and 5 speeds did not come with trans coolers. if it has one, it was added after delivery.

Lmao. Should I describe a 2 stick?
Or how to shift a 15 speed?
One flipper on the front, and a slider on the side?
This could be fun.....

i think just showing the sift diagram of the single stick 20 speed will do. :p

i had one almost as good Charlie.
escorting a D8k with 13'11" blade down the highway, a chebby van whipped around me just as the highway went from 3 lanes with shoulder to concrete divider two lanes and no shoulder with guard rail.
he hit the cutting edge of the blade doing close to 70.
and peeled the whole passenger side off the van.

cop showed up and asked me first what happened cause i was in back of the mess with the lights on.
i told him that guy has got to be drunk to not see me or the blade of the dozer.

he was blind drunk, could not even stand up when trying to get out of what was left of the van.

Now, for today's Round 2 . . .

Is this the starter relay? And what is that cut-off black wire?
View attachment 200590
nope. those are the air intake heater relay, and glow plug relay.
the cut off wire is some kind of added ground wire.

And is this the crankshaft pulley??

And how much RTV makes a good key for the keyway???
View attachment 200592

Poor thing is sitting in EvapoRust for tonight . . .

Md puts salt down bad. I am guilty. Drove a plow truck for 37 years. The word was you get paid to paint the roads white!

The mounts aren't a bad job, let me know when you are ready, there is a tool, but you can make it for about $20

the whiter the road, the betterrer the plow truck pilot.

we started using salt brine on the roads before the salt gets slung out by the plow pilots here in Joisey.
the car wash people started tipping us for each salt covered car that comes through the car wash. (y)

Does the lack of gaskets mean that Ford expects me to RTV all those places?

no, that just means they want you to spend more money for the gaskets.
