I bought a used SD pump from an 02 that I swapped into my truck. It had the IPR in it also so I figured I would take it apart and clean it up.
Everything seemed to go fine during the rebuild of it but when I fired the truck up after the swap it sounded like a rod was gonna come out of it. I looked down at my Commander and I had 3450 psi of ICP at IDLE.

I swapped the electrical portion (not sure what it's called) with the one from my stock IPR and no change. At that point I decided I might as well put my stock IPR in and what do you know, it runs perfectly. I did not take it appart I just put new o-rings on it.

I do not know for sure if the IPR was working or not but the pump was supposedly off of a running truck that was wrecked.
Anybody know what I may have done wrong when putting the IPR together? I followed the instructions exactly and the tiny pin was put back in the right way.

Maybe so. I was kind of happy about having a spare one but

I really wish I would have gained more from the HPOP swap. 300 psi of ICP at WOT is not even noticable SOTP. :lame:

Racehauler,

Most of the time this occurs because the two threaded sections were not bottomed out. If you used any teflon tape or heavy thread compound, it will cause the threads to tighten before they bottom out and it will leave too much gap behind the pin. This will cause uncontrollable pressures.

Lock-tite is all you should use.

I don't see a link to the instructions you mentioned, so I don't know if this applies to you or not.

Hope this helps

Bob

I gained some noticable midrange and no more dying off at 2800 rpms with a 17* swap. :D

Sounds like your IPR is just stuck closed. There is either a piece of debris still in it, or it isn't assembled properly. I don't even mess with used IPR's anymore, just replace them.

I would also stay away from using any thread locking compound on them. That can cause problems, if it gets into the valve.

When I cleaned mine, I took it all apart and soaked the pieces is carb juice. Put it back together after soaking it in 710 for a while, the only sealer I used was o-rings.

I think this very well could be my issue. I did not use any type of thread selant or threadlocker on it. I did notice that there was some type of selant/locktite on it before I started and I didn't do a very good job of cleaning it off. When I compared the 2 IPR's the one that was sticking closed (max ICP) was a good 1/4" longer than my stock one out of my 96 pump. The threads were run together a lot further on the one that operates correctly. Maybe I need to clean the threads up better and try assembling it again and see what happens.

The instructions gregrob posted are the ones I used.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas

When I get a few more bucks together I may attach my stock pump also. Maybe that will satisfy my current hp quest...but probably will just be temporary relief
