What else have you done to the system? Or plan to do? I think it would take some pretty substantial mods to make an intercooler upgrade worthwhile. Like a huge turbo, 5" exhaust, big injectors/custom tunes. I'm hitting 35psi and wouldn't dare go more on a stock internals engine. So that means the oem intercooler is supporting that power level fine at least. I spent about that much on a KC300x stage1 turbo. If you're still on the stock turbo, that will do more for you than an intercooler.

The all aluminum CSF’s are great bang for the buck!

My 1997 7.3 did not come with an intercooler. I chose and Banks and couldn't be more happy with the installation and performance. I asked three mechanics for a quote on the installation and none of them got back to me, so I did it myself. The instructions were great. Step by step and everything worked. The only issue was my S&B air filter housing would not work so I replaced the housing and filter with a K&N. Also one of the AC lines had to really be pushed aside. But, no leaks and it rest firmly up against one of the intercooler tubes. Wow, did it make a difference in my towing power and lowered the EGT's. I towed my 5th wheel 1,200 miles to Cali with the temp never rising over 1,000.

welcome to PSN.
97 and 2002 are pretty much completely different trucks. 02 came equipped with an intercooler.
as you already found out, the 97 did not.
do yourself a favor and get rid of the K&N filter, they are about as good as no filter at all. they let in way to many fines, and will end up "dusting" your turbo and possibly the engine too.

if you don't believe me, pull the intake tube off the turbo, it will be coated with very fine dust particles.

I sure hope the AFE filter I put in isn't as bad as the K&N. It's oiled too, but thicker than the K&N material that is basically see through.

I agree with Power007 on CSF. Anything they sell is top notch. They have several options. The 6017 is marketed as just a stock replacement, still tube/fin but at least has metal side tanks, nice and cheap and still considered a slight upgrade, can be had around $300 shipped. The 6029 is their mid level which is a bar/plate and a full inch thicker than stock. (I have this one installed) but mostly because I got it still new in box on offer-up for $300, can be had new for around $500. Didn't notice much from it, but it's not summer yet. Then there is the 7107. Not sure what's better about them. I don't see how it gets better than the 6029 when they are the same dimensions/bar/plate design and they have the same description. But they are $1000 like the other big boys. Mishimoto, Banks, AFE, etc all the way up to $2000. Who knows if any of them are actually better than the CSF 6029. The thing is huge and heavy lol. Probably the best bang for buck at it's price.

That being said, I can't recommend upgrading because I didn't notice anything after the swap. So anything close to a stock engine won't benefit. You all will not likely find the cheap deal I did, making the cost unjustified. Maybe some lower EGT's I guess.
