I'm here to eat CROW!

Many have heard my endless rants about nozzle hole size and 7.3 performance on tds. Ultimately I know that the math works but somewhere between theory and practice it all went to hell. Maybe it was execution on my part or the myriad other parts of the equation such as my use of outside vendors. Either way it was an important lesson in theory vs. real world for me.

Never-the-less after 2+ years of beating my head against the wall w/ a truck that makes vastly more hp/ runs much better when I put stock AD injectors in it than it does w/ my hopped up, modified for better internal flow, small nozzle having BDs I've decided to "join 'em."

Specifically DI and crew will be the group I'll be joining. After a trip down to DI on Saturday confirmed that my "set-up" was hopeless and a quick ride/ reminder of what a properly running 7.3 should run like when it is set up correctly ("here, hold my pink drink and watch this") I've decided to do EXACTLY what David instructs me to do.

David has already got full control of my injectors and they are getting exactly what he tells the injector builder to put in them. And that includes huge .012" nozzles!!! Hey, the ride in Amanda's truck and the #'s that Thuggy, Imelmo, etc are putting out makes it clear that this set up works and works well. I'll also be going to DI programming (nothing against DP at all, it is just I want a combo from a single vendor) as well as likely switching turbos to exactly what David asks for.

So I'm here to eat crow. :redspotdance:

PS. For one last stand for small nozzles I'll remind everyone what Charlie is doing w/ small nozzles and I want to say that before my BDs were modified & my truck broke, my truck felt approximately as fast as what Amandas truck felt like.

Good Luck Sun.

Hopefully in the near future I can help to show you that your calculations were not wrong at all. Just have to get this DAC3 out of my way first. If you had simply tossed on a set of the nozzles I'm running instead of those EDMers that never balanced or flowed worth a ####, it would have been no problem. Your calcs were fine. The process of turning them into a real nozzle was the failure. I fully believe that if you would have used the EH process to begin with you would have been right where you wanted to be.

FWIW, the lowest power my truck will make on the inertia dyno with the lowest boost possible was 544. I don't want that much torque on these rods, so I asked for nothing more at that rpm.

Just don't think your idea was not sound. The act of putting it into practice was where it derailed.

Either way, best of luck.

Well Sun, I'm glad you finally saw the light. I have read your posts on TDS for some time now and frankly, They all confused me and gave me a headache. You had the answers several yrs ago when you come by the DI shop the first time. They say hind sight is 20/20, Just think of the truck you would have if you would have just stuck with DI.

Welcome back.:ford:

What does a DI motor cost these days? There used to be a short block on the site with forged rods, but I can't find it anymore. I figure I got 100K-150K to go on my current mill(got 237K now :D) and would love to step up to at least forged rods, perhaps better if money permits.

So how much are you putting into the mill Sun, if you don't mind me asking?

Sun, Glad to hear your getting it worked out. Been waiting for a long time to see some numbers from yours and Clam's builds and we all know we wont be seeing any numbers from Clams. Good luck. Cota

That's pretty well what I've learned to do, although on rare occasion I'll do something he tells me not to do. :D Got away with it the first time (nitrous with forged rods, mini-me's, and a 38) but not the second (nitrous with forged rods, B-codes, a 42, and Snow White's tuning).

A little update guys.

I got the injectors back from David's people last week and I had them back in by nightfall. Got up the next morning (w/ no miles on them yet) and drove the truck 200 miles to do some dove hunting. (bagged about 4 in the morning)

The truck is a lot better than it was but is still missing some key ingredents.

The truck now pulls nice and hard and my Duty Cycle is now normal (which it wasn't before due to fuel plate leakage) but large clouds of smoke still make it all but undrivable. It just needs more air and less pw at this point.

I'm going w/ David's preferred turbo set up and I'll be installing it in the next week or two once it arrives here in Austin.

Then a drive down to DI should be the crowning touch to make it all complete. One nice powerful tow rig coming up!

I'll keep you guys updated.
