im looking at a 2001 f250 sc,8' bed, 4wd, stick, 7.3. it has 121,000 on it clean carfax. tan interior & green paint. asking $9500 for it. truck runs great, drives great. good pickup.. problem is i drive 114miles round trip every day to/from work. so im like 99% highway driving. currently have a 4cyl 5spd cheapo car for the commute but its needing more in parts then i paid for it. i get 29mpg in that. would it be possible to get truck above & achieve at least 25ish mpg out of it? or any 2000+ 7.3? what mods to get truck there? wouldnt lift truck. thinking lowering rear to match front instead of lifting front. bed cover, changing all fluids to synthetic. taking off the mud tires it has & doing an 18" or 20" rim with an a/t tire. what else? i know dont beat on it.. if i cant get the mileage i want i wont get the truck & i'll keep looking. mabye a 2wd

Look for a 2000 to 2003 VW Jetta TDI. Stay away from the automatic and keep up on the dedicated maintenance. I have just bought a Scan Guage II and it has improved my mileage about 6 mpg. My overall average is 48, but this tank I will make at least 56 mpg. I will drive 800 miles before the low fuel light and put in just over 14 gallons.

It is really a stupid car. lol Kind of like not having a fuel bill.

For your driving distance, the VW Jetta is hard to argue with, but if you want a truck (I did), hold out for a 4x2 with a stick and the PowerStroke.

i have an old stick 4x2 and i get about 21 if im trying so you can do it with the right set up,good luck man

well i got the car for the commute. i got a ranger for after work & weekend pimping. then i got an 88 f250 6.9 4spd 4wd for home depo/dump/junkyard/towing/plowing/hauling stuff. i'd like to get rid of all of these & just have one trucki to replace them all...but still get 20+ mph..am i not thinking clearly?

If you got a 2wd stick..and got a eco tune..you might be able to squeeze a lil over 20...but why spend 75-80 bucks in diesel every three or four days etc...when you could buy a jetta tdi or something and get 600-800 miles and only spend 30-40 bucks a tank once a week or so..just a thought..

am now looking into a tdi....thanx for the suggestion...guess i'll just get rid of the ranger & escort & mabye get a tdi...hell intake, full exaust, tune... make sum nice power been reading... even sound great.. youtube exaust clips. next year after i get my raise ill look into a superduty to replace the ol beater 6.9 idi

I like to think I've proven that a 4x2 stick Super Duty can get over 25 on a routine basis. I have a couple tricks left to get to 30.

Yea Dave, and you know how to and are dedicated to getting mileage. I watch most people, including myself get on my 97 and burn fuel to just to feel the acceleration and power.

With the Jetta, it is like a cult. I use it as a game to see how much I can really get out of the damn thing. When I started driving the Jetta or when I drive it like I stole it, I average about 44-46. Then I backed off some and pushed it up to about 48-50. Now that I have a Scan Guage II, I can see the areas of poor driving and I am working on this tank at 57 mpg. Hoping to break 800 miles before the low fuel light.

I don't know about the 7.3, 6.0 or 6.4, but when ever in the Jetta and I pick my foot off of the accelerator in slow down situations, the ECU shuts the fuel off and the SGII fuel reading goes to 3000 to 7000 mpg. That is where I have learned to really make mileage. Also, I can get better mileage in the 38 to 46 mph area. At 40 mph the scan gauge shows 80 to 90 mpg. Once I go above 55 it really comes down.

Does anyone know if the 7.3 diesels ECU's shuts the fuel off in the standard transmisson or while in torque converter lock up during deceleration in the automatic. My 89 F-150 does and it has a 300 six and C-6 transmission I will see if David Lott knows about the diesels.

If you do buy a Jetta, do your home work. the 2000 to 2003 are still the best, but you also have to do dedicated maintenance. It has a timing belt and if it is not changed and watched and if it breaks, hang on, because it gets expensive. It is German engineering and gets complicated.

I would bet Dave that if you bought a SGII that you could squeeze 1 to 2 more out of that B----h.

OldFordisBetter, do you home work before you buy. I was lucky and got a good Jetta and I bought the 97 F-250 new and am the only person to drive it.

The Jetta really is a stupid car. Rides nice, handles good, comfortable to sit in, great mileage, not to slow on acceleration and believe it or not, I saw 123 mph on the GPS showing a new F-150 where his upper limit was. What I can't figure out is why the USA drivers are so resistant to diesel cars.

bro i has a 80's diesel benz.. man that thing ran like hell... got good solid mileage. turned the boost up, intake, exaust & that thing would chirp 2nd & third... looked like ass but it handed ya your ass then i wrapped it around a telephone pole when i was 21...wanna get back into diesels but for the commute the truck wouldnt be good enough i guess..the jetta sounds good. what about the golf?

what does it take to do the timing belt. parts cost? i would probably do the work myself but curious of what some have paid to get it done?

Parts are about 325.00 for the best one, but you need to have the damn tools to hold the camshaft, injection pump and a program called VagCom to set the timing after it is running. You can rent the tools for about 50 bucks for a couple of weeks, and there is a step by step posted at the TDICLUB.COM that I followed to the letter and have had no problems. Took me about 10 hours to do, but I was slow and checked each step.

Believe me, there is nothing as simple as a push rod engine.

To buy the tool kit it was about 250.00. The computer program if I remember right was about 400.00 Son and I each have one so we trade off the systems.

I am going for about 500,000 miles with it so I will have a belt change every 100,000 miles.

Funny thing is...my truck still can go like the proverbial bat. All I have to do is yank the shift and stomp the pedal.

Yes, my '03 7.3PSD, automatic only as standard in Excursions, shows 999MPG on the SGII when the TC is locked up slowing down. In OD, this only works until about an indicated 47MPH, then it "loosens up", not total lock up. I'll usually downshift with the selector button to D, then it continues in DFCO in lock up to about 30MPH. At least that is the shift strategy on my DP Tuner in 80 Econo and stock. Using it hasn't helped my mileage with any kind of actual reality that I can generate any data. SGII did help some of my driving technique though so that I'm able to do better with cold weather mileage.

I picked up a '98 Jetta TDI 5spd. Four tanks, average of a little over 50 with a high of a little over 52MPG. It's about 20MPG better than our very reliable Ford Focus, which is really just amazing, but I don't have long term future data on how the Jetta is going to take care of me compared to the nearly ten years that we've had the Focus too. Best MPG on the Focus was over 36MPG. I do believe that I've gotten pretty lucky on my Jetta in that is seems to be a "good one" so far.

i'd like a turbo diesel & if i cant get the truck right now then the tdi sounds nice

It's hard to beat the tdi's. I use to have a 2005.5 Jetta tdi 5 speed Package 2 w/ an RC chip. It was a great car and I averaged 44 mpg chipped and w/ an egr delete. I only sold it because I simply couldn't conduct business in the cab as it was too loud and it was a good time to get out. I was shopping for a 2010 just the other day but it's a $4K option now and they are breaking a lot so I'd just buy a DI gasser these days.

One thing I was going to mention about programming for mileage was that when Jody and I were programming my 7.3 he was playing around and turned off my coast brake and also made it where my truck wouldn't downshift so easily. It was really weird because w/o that coast brake coming on the truck just freewheels and it really will roll a long time.

I drive on avg of 400 a week and i am tired of filling up the truck. I am also looking around for a TDi. Thats cars are pretty hard to argue with
