Some trucks have premature failures. Some go MANY miles without any significant issues. My opinion is that the stock trucks are a lot more reliable than these forums make them appear.
Hard to know why, EXCEPT ...... we know that routine maintenance is the key to make reliability likely (and some required maintenance that is above and beyond what is normally thought to be routine).
- synthetic oil, and oil / filter changes at no more than 5k miles (OEM style filters only).
- fuel filter changes every 10k -15k miles (OEM style filters only).
- flush coolant system and replace fluid every 50k miles and use the proper fluid (also check coolant nitrite levels every year at a minimum).
- check batteries every 6 months w/ a load tester and put a full charge on them w/ a battery charger at the same time. Replace both batteris when EITHER one of them looks weak.
- Tranny fluid changes (or flush) every 30k miles, and change the external filter
- Keep the fuel/water separator drained and consider adding a quality fuel additive at each fill-up (in case you get a tank of poor quality fuel).
- If you keep the EGR valve, pull it yearly. If it is badly coked up, you have some combustion issues somewhere. At a minimum, clean it. If the valve is older than a 2007 valve, I would replace it - there have been improvements on it.
- Get the most recent flash upgrade for your computers (at the dealership). There are some GREAT features to the most recent programming.
- minimize idling (as was said before)
IMO, you also need need gauges (to know when little problems begin so you can fix them before they get expensive).
- Fuel pressure gauge
- EOT and ECT
- Boost and EGT
- Voltage
Lastly, consider adding a FEW upgrades (you can also get carried away and spend a LOT of money and have a platform capable of some big hp numbers).
- coolant filter
- stiffer spring in fuel pressure regulator
- ccv re-route
- FICM repair (re-soldering and voltage upgrade - may even want custom programming)
- Larger turbo drain tube (if you do not already have it)
You can always go for the ARP head studs and the EGR system delete, but that is big bucks and not necessarily needed for a stock truck (IMO). I personally see no great advantage for external oil filter, external oil cooler (as long as coolant system health is maintained), or aftermarket intakes (unless going for big horsepower).
