i only have 17k but how long does a 6.0 last? my friend thinking about buying one.

Thats a bit of False information dude. Seriously. I have an early 03 and she did just fine till the heads lifted, but thats my faught running the looney tune, hitting the track, hitting dynos, and racing the highway every chance I had. I had 40k plus before I had to do anything but that wasnt stock. My buddy has 100k on his now with no problems and tuned but doesnt dog it either.

Its really how you take care of them. Theres a bunch out there with over 300k I said before.

Well, if you do the following mods right away it could live a long time.

Head Studs, EGR delete, external oil cooler kit, Bypass oil filter, coolant filter, and change the oil every 3000 miles.

Im sure I'm missing some things

..........or buy a 7.3

Yeah your missing a whole lot, like power, technology, and the ability to make 500+ without your rods flying out of the motor, like your 7.3.

I saw an 05 in a truck stop a few months back that had 495,000 on it. It was posted on here a long time ago. 6.0's are a great engine, unfortunately, they had problems early on.

i asked how long do they last not what you need to make them last. my friend looking to buy a high mileage 6.0. he's afraid of 160k plus 6.0. i haven't had a 6.0 with that kind of mileage. is it ok? 7.3's have problem to there not gods i know lol

I bought mine with 150k from my dad. I now have almost 180k on her. The problem I have now is a ripped intercooler boot. I gotta get that fixed soon. Otherwise she's been good.

i just rolled over 186k on mine and its still purrin like a champ..... probably about dew for a set of bigger injectors but my stockers are still runnin fine so i cant bring myself to change them

#8 ·
got 128k on mine, still running good (knocks on wood). Maintenance is the key to these, i change my oil every 5k, but when i can afford an oil bypass kit, ill try to get more out of it. As stated above, if your friend buys one and does the mods above, he should have a pretty solid platform.

There was a guy on the interstate i talked to over a cb for an hour, he was driving a 7.3 and he said he had a 6.0 that went to 480k then shut down or needed overhaul. He put 1 set of inj. and a turbo on it. He hauls tri-axle enclosed trailers all over country.

480K seems like a lot for a 6.0 but the more I think about it, it could happen. Especially highway miles.

The thing that kills them is when they idle a lot. Also, it really depends on your luck. Some guys go through 3 sets of injectors, a set of head gaskets, and maybe a couple EGR valves and coolers and lets throw in a new turbo also, all before the warranty is up.

The next guy will go 120K before any problems whatsoever.

How long will they last?
For the lenght of the warranty, then till you wallet is empty, credit cards are maxed out.
A mistress is cheaper will still put a smile on your face.

Still beating the crap out of my 05 at 135137miles. Threw the oil bypass in the garbage. 100k on the 07 and just did the 8th oil change no bypass on that one. Valvoline 5w40. No injectors yet. Studded the 05 but not the 07. Both are tuned. The 05 got an oil cooler when I ran it way low on coolant. I was not going to let that crotch rocket get away...

tell him to purchase some 55gal drums of valvoline and a couple cases of motorcraft filters and if he'll actually use them as directed or dictated by use then he'll get some good life out of it.....that being said to start at a 160k not knowing how the truck has been cared for is crazy risky,,,good luck on his decision but there are great deals out there right now on lower milage trucks I'd look elsewhere....I believe in the 6.0 so rock on....

I made it to around 130-140k before my major problems set in. Since then it's been one after another. I think most of them are behind me now, and I'm sure the engine will run forever if I keep throwing injectors and the occasional lifter at it.

Some trucks have premature failures. Some go MANY miles without any significant issues. My opinion is that the stock trucks are a lot more reliable than these forums make them appear.

Hard to know why, EXCEPT ...... we know that routine maintenance is the key to make reliability likely (and some required maintenance that is above and beyond what is normally thought to be routine).
- synthetic oil, and oil / filter changes at no more than 5k miles (OEM style filters only).
- fuel filter changes every 10k -15k miles (OEM style filters only).
- flush coolant system and replace fluid every 50k miles and use the proper fluid (also check coolant nitrite levels every year at a minimum).
- check batteries every 6 months w/ a load tester and put a full charge on them w/ a battery charger at the same time. Replace both batteris when EITHER one of them looks weak.
- Tranny fluid changes (or flush) every 30k miles, and change the external filter
- Keep the fuel/water separator drained and consider adding a quality fuel additive at each fill-up (in case you get a tank of poor quality fuel).
- If you keep the EGR valve, pull it yearly. If it is badly coked up, you have some combustion issues somewhere. At a minimum, clean it. If the valve is older than a 2007 valve, I would replace it - there have been improvements on it.
- Get the most recent flash upgrade for your computers (at the dealership). There are some GREAT features to the most recent programming.
- minimize idling (as was said before)

IMO, you also need need gauges (to know when little problems begin so you can fix them before they get expensive).
- Fuel pressure gauge
- EOT and ECT
- Boost and EGT
- Voltage

Lastly, consider adding a FEW upgrades (you can also get carried away and spend a LOT of money and have a platform capable of some big hp numbers).
- coolant filter
- stiffer spring in fuel pressure regulator
- ccv re-route
- FICM repair (re-soldering and voltage upgrade - may even want custom programming)
- Larger turbo drain tube (if you do not already have it)

You can always go for the ARP head studs and the EGR system delete, but that is big bucks and not necessarily needed for a stock truck (IMO). I personally see no great advantage for external oil filter, external oil cooler (as long as coolant system health is maintained), or aftermarket intakes (unless going for big horsepower).

Im at 70K on the clock and knock on wood i havent had any problems, i have an EGR delete and if your friend is looking at i high mileage truck, i would suggest he puts one in, i know it saved me alot of money on EGR valves and coolant in the long run. right now im checking into a set of headstuds and gaskets just to be safe.

2006 F350 DRW. Used for my car transport Business. Its always loaded.
318,000 on the clock now and still pulling strong. Head Gaskets at 230,000 along with EGR delete and 4" cat back exhaust. Oil changes at 7,500, fuel filter every 21,000 miles.

Seems that these things last the longest with the least of problems when they are pulling a Sh**ton of weight 99% of the time?

If you own a 6.0, you have to be smart.. You can't just jump in and beat the snot out of it and not take care of it. The guy I bought mine from didn't take very good of care of it. I bought it, and had to clean up his mess. Ya it sucked and I bitched about it but now I love the dam thing. I looked at a few 6.4's as of late but I'm not that impressed with them to tell the truth.. I'll keep my 6.0 for now and maybe buy 6.7 a year or two old at some point..

Yes after owning a 7.3 the 6.0 takes a little more care to keep running good. Even cold temps seem to take a 6 litre longer to run good than a 7.3. It's just a lot of little things, but when you get them right it runs awesome.
