Went to put my spare back under my truck cause it as been in th bed, the damn winch that lets the spare down takes a little star key that I didn't have! So I had to unbolt the winch assembly and take it down and beat the key off so the regular rod would tun it to let the spare down, I had even called the dealer and they said they didn't make the anymore!

Jack's dad was on his way to Cleavland last winter right after I got my truck, He get a flat on the turn pike and no way tio get the spare tire out from under the truck. I end up getting on the turnpike finding him on the side of the road, let him use my spare till he got back. Nice guy I am. LOL I've seen a lot of those keys laying in cabs that go through here, never really thought to grab them.

I had to drop the spare in my '06 to install the gooseneck hitch. Finally got the owners manual out to learn I had to use this "key". After 30 minutes of farting around with it went to the dealership to find out I had the wrong key! Luckily I wasn't out on the road.

Yea it would really haved sucked to have a flat and not have that key, I checked both my dads and brothers SD's and they both had the key.
OK. WTF is the key. I just stick the 1/2" square drive in mine and crank it down. What/where is this key supposed to be??

It's supposted to be in your glove box till the former owner pulls it out & looses it. My Ma's loosened up & even the dealer said they didn't have a key for it. So off came the tailgate & out came the bolt cutters. Took me less that 2 mins to get the whole job done & throw the spare in the bed. Might get it fixed one of these days...

On the 99.5 there is no lock
They must have brought it back for the 2000+ because my Ma's 00 has a star shaped lock & she has an XL. My buddy & I were looking at an 01 XLT F350 & found one of those keys that everyone is "Supposted" to have in the glove box. My buddy's early 99 didn't come with the key & he needs it too.

That key was a pain, never would catch right. I knocked my lock out of there, no need for it.

Nigel, yours either didn't come with the stupid lock or somebody already got rid of it before you bought the truck.

My early 99 does not need a key either. Maybe it was an option. Stupid option. I have never even heard of someone have a spare stolen.

Mine came with alloys. The spare was steel.
