Going back to stock exhaust | what should I expect?

When I bought my truck, it already had a 5” exhaust installed. And I haven’t stopped having problems with it… The fitment, the look, the noise, and keeping the dang thing in place. The massive downpipe doesn’t clearance the large ZF6 bell housing, thus it rattles. The tailpipe is so large it doesn’t clearance a full-size spare tire. The system doesn’t utilize all the exhaust hangers on the chassis, so the whole thing flops all over the place. The lap joint connections are a real pain to fit together, and once they’re fitted, it doesn’t matter how much I tighten the compression clamps. The pieces always slip and shift around. I’ve had sections of exhaust come loose and fall off while driving on multiple occasions because of it. It has a “performance” muffler that does a decent job, but there’s still a noticeable drone. I’ve messed with it for hours, and had to chop sections to get it to somewhat fit right, and it still isn’t 100%. Needless to say, I really dislike aftermarket exhausts (at least this one has left a real sour taste in my mouth).

So I’m going back to a stock exhaust system. But I’m mildly concerned about doing so because I’m afraid I may loose gas mileage, or increase EGTs. I’m currently getting 16-20 mpgs on the freeway. And I also don’t want to have too much backpressure. As I said, the truck already had the exhaust installed when I bought it. So I don’t really know what a truck with a stock pipe drives like.

Why not go to a 3.5” downpipe to 4” exhaust with a muffler? Chambered or blow thru your choice. There are quality kits out there that stay put. With mods I wouldn’t run a stock exhaust, especially with larger injectors+towing.
I have stock injectors with no intent to go larger. Mild tuning (25 hp tow) head studs, and everything else stock. I’m wanting to go stock because I can find a complete system used for dirt cheap instead of spending 600+ for a shop to do a quality custom exhaust.

Have you ever used the Banks Monster Sport cat-back? I like the way the tailpipe is bent. Looks like it’d clearance the spare tire better. I also like that it’s a 90 degree exit, and used all the hangers.

i never use band clamps. they suck. i weld the pipes so they do not fall off.
Can you weld the pipes while they’re installed in the truck without frying any of the computers?

I’ve included pictures of the fitment problems. Where I’ve had to hammer it to get it to somewhat work for now. And where the hanger doesn’t lineup.

I'd have to second Matthewd11's suggestion of a 3.5" downpipe to a 4" exhaust w/ muffler...or just a 4" turbo back MBRP system with their muffler. My truck has the latter, it uses the factory hanging locations (as far as I can tell) and there is room for the spare tire without issues. As for sound, you'll know it exhales freely at idle and under normal driving conditions but isn't loud...now when lead fills your right shoe you'll hear it and so will everyone near you, but that's just when heavy on the throttle.
MBRP turbo back is what I already have. Their downpipe isn't bent properly to clearance a larger manual transmission. And I don't like that their tailpipes go out at a 45 degree angle. I want a factory look with it coming straight out the side with a turndown.
Looks like the problem with the clearance between engine and firewall is the clamp. The post with the bolt/nut in it is up against the firewall. I think rotating that might do the trick. As for the spare tire spacing, OUCH! When they design these things they use a stock truck as the test vehicle. Do you by chance have a larger than stock spare tire? That would explain it. Otherwise I can't see why that's so tight. I've seen 5" exhausts fit through there, so this is for sure weird. As for your hangers....well.....I've got nothing. Someone screwed up there obviously. Maybe the pipes were made on a Friday at 4:59. lol
It’s a 285/75-16 spare. Just a hair larger than stock. The down pipe is hitting the starter housing.
