Brittain @ Sunrise has gotten me a bunch of parts for about 50% of what my local dealers quoted.
No affiliation just a happy customer.
:ford:
He's always fair...plus I live 10 mins from them so I always use them for stuff.

He told me that the VSM info needs to be pulled from my truck prior to removing the old one and then flashed into the new one once its installed. Is that not the case?

Hey Guys,

My VSM is shot as well.... found the part at the dealer for $116.32 and after talking with them one of the techs said as long as the key didnt have a chip in it they wont have to be programmed.....im really hoping this is the case, but any confirmation?

I plugged my GEM in out of curiosity and tested 4x4 the transfer case motor moved and the 4x4 lights lit up so I'm happy I tested power windows and radio forgot to test the wipers I had heard the GEM does not always need programming I was told try it if everything worked then don't pay to have it programmed.

Can you post a pic of its location in your truck please? I am going to order mine today.

Not sure if your talking to me but here are a couple pics from my 02 sorry for crappy pics. Drop glove box and it is mounted in the upper right it 3 connectors going to mine and only 1 screw which takes some work to get out its towards front of truck. The first pic you can barely see the barcode the 2nd is a different angle.

Dang brother...I love this truck. It's got more bugs than my duramax had, but it's a lot better looking for sure

Do you have any Glamis trips planned this year?

Were you the same Richierich from Hotboat/Performance boats also?

No, different Richie Rich

Did this VSM swap actually fix your problems? I'm going to finally pick mine up tomorrow

Just to be sure, this is behind my glove box...why are some trucks behind the fuse box, some are behind the radio and some are behind the glove box???

I'm totally confused now! I went to Sunrise Ford to pick my VSM up and it looks completely different...the picture I posted has two plugs on one side and a third on another side. The VSM that Sunrise had, had a sticker on it that said its the security lock module. I showed the guy the picture I posted here and he pulled up the part number and it shows it as a GSM!!! I thought 2003 trucks didn't have GSM?!?! The GSM is $198 plus fax and the VSM was $112 plus tax. I don't mind spending the extra money, but I need to be sure I'm replacing the right part because they told me that electronics are non returnable once they leave the door!

They stopped mounting the vsm/gem behind the fuse box in late 01 due to the water problems shortening them out. The 4x4 along with the windows, power door locks, and everything else it controls is all in one box.
I am new here and trying to troubleshoot my husband's truck. I have more time on my hands I guess than he does. Maybe I should have started a new post but his reply was kind of what the problem is all about. 4x4 is not working on our 2002 F250 7.3L and there is no light on the dash switch, key fob doesn't work, put key in to unlock door and alarm goes off, radio stays on, there has been times the windows wouldn't work in the heat of the summer and the dome light was staying on after starting for about 15 minutes. From reading info on other sites (didn't find yours til now) he had swapped the relays and checked the fuses. After swapping the relays the dome light now works as it should. He also took to a friend of his brothers who is a mechanic and ex ford tech. He tested everything & ran diagnostics and thinks the problem is a wire somewhere. He did find a corroded wire in the instrument cluster and replaced it but it didn't fix anything. He said he could not test the gem/4x4 control module though. We had read numerous posts stating on the 2002 f250 4x4 7.3L they had replaced their gem and fixed some of these 4x4 and electrical problems. The part number behind the dash on my husband's truck is YL34-14B205-BA and is referred to as a GEM/4x4 shift control. The replacement part we purchased is 3C3Z-14B205-AA. The mechanic and a tech from Ford that I called stated that the module is just a 4x4 control module and doesn't control anything else. He plugged it in and didn't program it and said it did not fix the 4x4. Any thoughts on something I read that stated "in 2002 the GEM was no longer used and it's functions were split up by three separate modules: the instrument cluster (IC) the vehicle security module (VSM) and in 4X4 equipped truck, the 4X4 module.."
Just hoping for a fix using a part already purchased. Like I said he did not program it & I don't know if that would have made a difference or not. I was also told by the store that sold me the part that it may not be programmable now that he installed it without programming & "as built" data may be required to complete the programming sequence.

I went threw this mess for months with my 02 and the only thing I didnt have problems with was 4x4. My windows would seldome stop working unless I turned the key off then on n tested them to work before starting. My key fob wouldnt work, dome lights would stay on no matter what (that was a combination of 2 things ill get to in a minute), my radio wouldnt shut off. Mostly all of this stuff is controlled by the vsm above the glove box as picture earlier in the tread. If you remove yours you can take the plastic apart carefully (it snaps together) and look at the internal circuit board. If theres white carbon tracks or black burnt spots (as mine had) then youll either need a new one (exspensive and needs to be programmed at the dealer to work properly) or like I did and write the bold mumber down and find a good used one from the same year and options and will plug in and work great you just have to program your key fobs to work with it (not hard to program them as I have the instructions here I can post for you). (I just saw a VSM on here for sale from an 03). Now in my case the vsm fixed everything except the dome lights and the wd-40 trick worked on all of the door switches (they tend to stick and your light wont go off until freed up) except my driverside I had to remove the door latch assembly and take the switch out and free it up by hand. You spray the door latches from the outside about 50 10 times and between the 10 times of spraying open and shut the door atleast 50 times (im not jokin 50 times) and most of the time the door switches will free up and start working. Do one door at a time. If that doesnt fix the dome lights send me a pm and ill walk you threw the process of using the odometer to find out wgitch door needs more attention and what to do.

When you spray the door latches spray towards the bottom of the latch with the hose connected to the wd-40 can and soak it up inside really good each time as the switch is right at the bottom of the door latch and as you open and shut the door 50 times the wd will work its way in the switch and free up the plastic plunger on the top that controls the switch. Do it to all the doors and report back but youll prob definatly need a different vsm (either new then programmed at ford or used as used will usually not need reprogramming if the same number vsm is used (just the key fobs and thats easy to do yourself.) Check the vsm internal board for burnt or carbon tracks first though.

I also have been chasing down a non-working 4X4 issue for two years now. Everything in my 2002 F250 7.3 auto works except the ESOF. Everybody keeps saying that the "box" above the glovebox controls windows, lights, radio, ect, ect, ect BUT my "box" has been completely removed from my truck for over two years and everything else works. If all of these electronic things are controlled throughout this "box" then how is all of my stuff still working perfectly when my "box" has been unplugged for years.

I was told this is called the 4X4 shift control module OR the chassis control module. My part number is 2C3T-14B205-AA and was removed from directly above the glovebox. I have tried two different used ones from wrecked truck to no avail.

I wish I could get the 100% true real story on what would fix my ESOF without spending an arm and a leg at the stealership but with so much misleading information it's hard to figure out just what I need to fix my problem.

I would really like to install that 3 way switch mod I read on here a while ago but the guy that originally posted the mod disappeared before explaining exactly how he did the switch.

Does anybody else have any ideas that would get my ESOF working again?

Thanks in advance.

You are correct, on the 02 that module behind the glove box is the 4X4 control module. According to the FSM a replacement must be configured by Ford in order to work.
