Hello!

New to the forums, and new to the 7.3L Turbo-Diesel experience overall. My brother and I have a '97 7.3L Turbo Diesel. We're seeing a pretty bad fuel leak, the engine valley is pretty much full of fuel at this point, the odor is strong, and it leaks down out of the bottom of the truck. From what research we've done today, and preventive maintenance we've also done, we find that the Fuel Pump (Fuel Lift Pump? we've seen conflicting comments on what the part is exactly) is the likely culprit. It's smack in the middle of the block, just forward of the turbo (as one looks under the hood from the front). As an aside, our front fuel tank no longer functions.

We're going to replace it, but we're worried about it being cam driven and any possible ramifications of that (or can we just swap and it's designed in such a way we don't have to worry about cam/pump adjustments) As far as we know, this guy is pretty much bone stock with 200k clicked. Oh and we're guessing no fuel pumps in the tanks? Seems someone mentioned that in our research.

We've already taken out the fuel filter canister and cleaned it out, and changed the filter as well. We've also replaced all the hoses from the canister back to the pump. It seemed ok for about a day or two, then the problem resurfaced. The truck seems to drive just fine (with a caveat, mentioned below), no smoke or anything. However, if we shift into 4th around 35-40mph while the engine is still cool and give it steady gas, we start getting hesitation/jerkiness as though we're in much too low of a gear, thus necessitating a downshift into 3rd. The RPM in 4th at 35-40mph with the stock 5 speed is about 1,200-1,400 RPM. After the engine has warmed up a bit, this seems to lessen or go away.

Also, if we cruise for a while on the highway at 70mph or less, the temp is fine. If we then accelerate up to and past 75mph (about a ½ hour into cruising) you can literally watch the temp gauge fly up into overheating territory. We're wondering if anyone has any suggestions on that, as the only time it happens is in the aforementioned scenario. If we turn the heater on full blast, and drop it to 60-65mph it ever so slowly returns to normal.

Any advice or comments are welcome! We plan to pool our money to get the drivetrain in good running order and keep this truck for a good long while.

Sounds like the pump but check where the hard lines off of the pump go into the rear of the heads, they can make a big mess as well. The hesitation could be a million things, dirty oil or HPOP system probs, injectors, or it could just be running out of fuel. Your temp. problem could be several things as well, mine was doing something like that and it was due to oil getting in the coolant because of a bad oil cooler. Does it ever set the CEL?

By the way, welcome to the nation, and stage 2 refers to a higher performance injector. I am sure some others will chime in soon.

Thanks Fireman! Ok, so.... the first bit, we'll look into that! (the fuel system that is) As far as the temp problem, we haven't investigated that, nor even considered that, so we'll check that right away. No, we get no CEL whatsoever, the Truck seems to run just as happily as ever aside from the stumbling before we downshift it.

I've found some information as far as the Stage II goes, and wow, yeah... 100hp to the wheels because of better injectors? Man.... seems almost too good to be true!

We're excited to get this guy back up on his feet and running properly. I'm not a Ford fan as far as sports cars are concerned (my bro however has a 97 cobra drop top he's dropped an '03 cobra motor into) but man... you can't beat the Ford trucks at all.... No comparison.
