so my truck currently runs 265/75 r16s. i want to move up on tires size to 285s. one thing ive always run through my head when looking to mod my suspension and running gear is gear properly with the tire size to maximize durability and mpg. my question here is that with that small of a size difference will it even be worth the money to change gears? i drive a 01 250. im not honestly sure what gears it has. i run a little over 2000rpm at about 73 mph.

You have 3.73's for gears.
I have the same year pickup and changed from 265 to 285. Hand calculated my mileage has not changed at all, so with the slight increase in tire size causing odometer inaccuracy, I figured I'm getting slightly better mileage.

small increase in tire size i have found only matter in gas burners

A 285 is only slightly taller and wider than a 265. I'm seriously thinkin about 305's for my next set, running 265 michelins right now. great highway tire, suck for anything more than a graded dirt road.

My original 235s, Bridgestone Duelers 265 and Revo 285 were less than 1/2" diameter of each other and made no difference in milage. :confused:

remember now, the 235, 265 or what ever number is tire width, the height comes from the 60, 65 and so forth.

so say you had 235 75 16's and went to a 286 65 16 that would be a difference in height of only +0.71.

265 (section width in mm) / 75 (aspect ratio in % of section width) / 16 (wheel diameter) so to determine the tire height you would take 265 x .75 = 198.75 x 2= 397.5/25.4=15.65 +16= 31.64 overall height this will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and also depends on tread depth etc. so the formula is sectionwidth x aspect ratio x 2 then divide by 25.4 then add rim diameter which equals tire height..
