What could this be?

Trans light was flashing and truck would not shift out of second gear.

I let off the pedal and it just falls down to an idle.

Turn key off and restart, light goes off and trans shifts fine.

Hmm, lights suppose to set a code. Maybe reader isn't picking up pcm codes. Sticky reg valve possible, Could it be an OD start with hard TCC apply that feels like a shift to 2? Range switch could be intermitten. PcM not storing codes..., int sprag stuck  Will study it some more--late.

A shot in the dark Greg.
SSA could be stuck on. In D range shifts would be 1 to 2 normal. Then transmission would hold 2 when PCM commands the shift to 3. You shut down. Pressure relieves, SSA unsticks. Normal operation again. Hope that helps. The 4R100 Solenoid pack has been updated since 02.

I don't get it, so how does that unstick the solenoid?
RacerX can explain it better than I, but basically the solenoid gets stuck (for whatever reason) and wont come unstuck because it keeps commanding 2nd.
You shut the key off and reset the solenoids, relieve pressure, and they go back to normal and shift normally.

Well said. Shut down (key off) relieves the pressure allowing the solenoid actuator to move. A reboot of the system.
