 New law I guess. I have a 5" exhaust and failed my catalyst test for tampering. Found out early 99's had them along with later six speeds.

Anybody have suggestions on which route to take? Magnaflow has an aftermarket 5" for about $260.

I believe the stock exhaust was a 3" and I would need 2 5" to 3" reducers and unions to run a stocker. Any help would be appreciated.

Look under the hood on the valve cover or hood and see if it says "CATALYST" or "NON-CATALYST". It shouldn't need or have had a cat origanilly if it says "NON-CATALYST".

If the sticker is gone I'd find out thru a vin check to see if there was a cat installed thru the factory then go from there. Somebody will let you know how to check the vin, can't remember right now. I bought mine new so I know what came on it, I know what I put on it too..:pullover:

His computer brought up that early 99's (before 12/98) need a cat. I've done some research and believe he is right. One more thing to bite an early 99 owner in the rear.

I doubt anyone has put a cat on yet but I'm afraid it's going to become mote common in the future for those who had one from the factory. If anyone has a spare one lying around PM me.

E99's had cats....stick and auto. The 01, 02 and 03 275hp six speeds did aswell. However, I did see a 02 275 hp six speed that did not have one installed when it was brand new...It was a mexican built truck, I guess they forgot to install it. LOL

If you can weld or get some one to. Find an old one and gut it and straight tube it. Problem solved.

As others have said, early '99s sold in the US did have the cat installed. Exaust pipe diameter into the cat and the rest of the way was 3.5 inches.

Thanks for the link Ron. That is the only option I could find other than finding a used stocker. They actually make a 5" as well. I think two 5" unions and this one ought to do the trick.

You think it's a :badidea: to want the air as clean as possible?

I have lived in some big cities and made a decision to move to the country just to get away from the air.
AFAIK the smog laws are there to make the vehicles run as clean as they were when new, not to get them to a standard they were not designed to achieve.

People's ideas are mostly just a product of thier particular environment.

When I sold Peterbilts in SoCal and I would badmouth emissions laws strangling our trucks to these good old boys every last one of them was on the side of the government. For the simple reason that they had all grown up in air that they literally could not breathe in. It made people sick every day. It was damaging children and killing senior citizens. They couldn't see the mountains 1 mile away.

And those laws that I disliked and didn't understand were improving and saving lives in a dramatic fashion because the air in CA is much better now than it was 50 years ago. Thankfully.

Early '99s definitely came w/ cats. I'd be curious if they know about it from the ECM or the VIN?
