no black smoke..... running a triple dog downloader for last three years on tow economy it has always smoked black on a hard pull, conserned about exahust back pressure after modifications.... any ideas?

im concerned that maybe your engine is not happy with you and said HAHA when you pushed on the pedal.....

On a serious note, does the power seem to be there? Low on boost? What year is the truck? what other mods done to it?

'06 6.0 28-30 pounds of boost..... EGR delete, straight pipe. power doesnt seem as much as before

boost leaks? exhaust leaks? any strange noises? loosing coolant?

How many miles are on the fuel filters? May be a fuel issue.

fuel filters are new, new turbo boot, no coolent leaks..... also gutted the cat..... no strange noises

starts right up no problem
everything was good till the exahust mods, now its not smoking black, concered about the exahust back pressure are there any tunes that might fix this problem?

no.... didnt see any increase in the power after the mods ......not blowing black smoke now like it did before, i thought black smoke was power where did it go?

I really want to give you a hard time for saying that, simply because you can cut off your air intake to make black smoke, and if you were to do that you would lose power, but also have smoke. Smoke =/= power, it just means unburnt fuel, which most heavily modified trucks will produce simply because they have large injectors and not a large enough turbo to supply the air needed to burn it all. Smoke can mean power, but usually doesn't, now you did say you lost power after gutting the exhaust, your problem lies there I would assume (you knew that though), but what I'm not sure.

As a general rule people on this forum, among other forums frown upon smoke (especially a lot of it) because it was the people who produce smoke that caused a lot of the EPA restrictions we have on diesels today. They pretty much put a target on their back by producing smoke, and the EPA didn't have a problem taking the shot. Small amounts of smoke are overlooked, as it can be difficult to remove it completely. Some people do have tunes that produce smoke but are usually only used when not driving on streets, or if neccesary to let tailgaters know to back off, but otherwise it's frowned upon.

did you make sure to get everything out of the cat? I've worked on a few trucks that the owner had "cleaned" the cat out on. took the pipe loose right behind the cat at the connection and the catalyst material was broken into small chunks and jammed into the pipe by exhaust pressure and was limiting boost on the engine therefor limiting fuel as well

What kind of boost were you running prior to gutting the CAT?

So your running a high of 2 more PSI but lost power? Does anyone else have a clue? Which powerstroke do you own, 7.3, 6.0, or 6.4?
