2002 F250 4X4 Automatic Transmission. A friend of mine brought me her truck said the engine coolant temp gauge was not working. She said her son had changed the sensor and still nothing so they thought it might be the gauge it's self. they pulled the cluster and sent it out to have checked. Came back good gauge works. This is when she called me. I have 5 volts at plug and good ground from alternator case to plug is .03v. Called ford got the right sender for the gauge part number 3F1Z-12A648-A. Installed it now the check gauge light comes on and after about a minute of the truck running the gauge pegs out a hot. I also unpluged the cluster and I lose the 5v at the plug.

I have read that the coolant temp sensor does not go through the PCM witch I see no coolant temp wile plugged into the OBD port with my snap-on prolink. Also tha that the PCM uses oil temp for fuel management witch I can see with the scan tool plugged in. Any advise would be helpful.

I had the same problem with my 02', I cant remember exactly, but something along the lines of in late 01 or 02', they switched the coolant temp sensor to an actual oil temp sensor, so the voltage reading is different from what it used to be. Call up Clay at RiffRaff and he'll get you straightened out, he did it for me as well.

I'll see if I can find that info again...

Thanks for the info. I have one of those EOT sensor in stock at our shop I will try it today see what happens.

Emailed Clay at riffraff gave him the VIN of the truck he said it takes the EOT sensor. Installed one from Ford. Still doesn’t work. I almost think the problem might be in the PCM. All the wire diagrams show it going to the PCM but can not see it on live data when plugged in to scan tool
