I just received my new OE Ford finned aluminum rear diff cover from Bob at PowerStrokeShop.
Now I one quick question. How is it sealed to the rear?
The cover has a groove milled all the way around the flange, looks like an o-ring groove. Is it?
Or is it just installed with some RTV like the stocker?

TIA.

Just use some grey RTV such as Loctite 599 and you should be fine.

In case nobody mentioned it, some silicone will do the job for you.

I'm not sure, but I think someone did say just use silicone. Silicone should work.

There sure is a lot of this stuff being bandied about in this thread!

All joking aside...

Apply a new, continuous bead of sealant to the differential housing cover.
Use Clear Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESB-M4G92-A.

NOTE: The differential housing cover must be installed within 15 minutes of application of the silicone, or new sealant must be applied. If possible, allow 1 hour before filling with lubricant to ensure the silicone sealant has properly cured.

Install the differential housing cover and tighten the differential housing cover bolts.

I don't think I'd waste that good silicone on a diff cover, I'm SURE I can find something better to use them on.

Loctite 599, aka Cummins Grey, aka Navistar Grey. We use that to install all of our Meritor/Rockwell diffs. The 599 takes high TQ loads much better than other types of RTV. If it had much of a chance to leak we wouldn't be using it, no one wants to pull a diff twice. They are big and heavy and you have to move a lot of other big and heavey stuff out of the way to get them out.
