Well guys, i havent posted on here in a while ever since the powerstroke went away (blown HG, bad injectors, some other ####) so i just sold it as it.
RIP:

So anyway, i needed something quick and ran across a good deal. 1999 Cummins:doh: 3500 w/ 202,xxx miles when i bought it. Motor was leak free, not a lot of miles, it was another diesel, so i decided to bite and pick it up. $3,200.00 cash and it was mine. Its not pretty, but that's why i'm here. This is the day i brought it home and cleaned it up: Dont worry, I HATE this POS already:ford:

Im looking for advice on mods, EXTERIOR & engine, common problems to watch for, stuff like that. This is my first cummins. I am trying to avoid the whole "I drive a dodge im a bad a$$ mofo" thing that seems to come over most dodge guys. And I'd, like to add a little taste to it instead of truck nutz and cow skullz. I want to make it fun to drive, "peppy" without being a smoke pig, and spice the exterior up a little.

Im not sure exactly what im looking for with this thread , I suppose im just looking for info on mods, ideas on the exterior, etc etc.

Thanks guys!:bowfast:

Myles I've told you. Whether ornot you find a pickup bed...I'd still do the following. Sport bumper, color matched grille etc., billet grille, repaint, tow mirrors, simulators all the way around, OR 19.5's, repaint on flatbed with rhino liner on top surface, trans rebuild, stereo, smaller 40 horse injectors, a turbo that will clean them up nicely, tunes, done. Presentable dd/tow pig, and show up on a jobsite looking like a guy who's got his deal straight, and always remember...a rolling business card (vehicle that will stick out in a good way) is one of the best advertising devices.

Buying a flatbed truck was a good idea..."Smith Escort Services" doesn't seem nearly as dirty on the side of a dually lol

dont get a smarty there not as good on the vp44 as they are on the cp3 trucks, get an edge with the hot unlock and DON'T ground it to the pump. #1 problem is fuel pressure to the pump and causing them to fail, so youll need a fass or airdog to keep it fed. turbo- get an s300 62,64 or 66 depending on what you want to do with it. your trans wont hold the tuner so youll need an upgrade either clutch or torque converter and valve body. if you have any more questions just ask i know quite a bit about the cummins and if i cant answer them some of my friends are the best pullers in the country and hey can give you an answer, just dont make it a sled puller the most youll ever get out of that pump is 600-700hp

my opinon would be to ppump it. get rid of the vp44 all together. but thats a big project and about a grand if not more so just get it running decent first. then down the road add some injector nozzles, they aint that bad and a hx 40 or you could always go bigger. edge works good for those trucks, a redline box is the best but expensive. tow mirrors... would help it too! not big on the flatbeds but it you like it thats kool. nice looking rig. good luck!!

So you recommend a edge comp, that's not tapped to the pump? Bud all that does is act like a ez. Edge boxes are junk. If you recommend that, why not a TST? The TST is a fuel only box and that with a smarty is a awesome combo. The smarty advances timing in such a way that it's got much better throttle response, and feels like more bang for buck. They don't however make much power by them selves. But the smarty would do what your asking.

Like already stated, air dog with filters, turbo I would do a 62-13 with ss housing. That would give you great spool up and the tight exhaust housing helps too. Would clear up the smoke from whatever tuning you decide to go with. Injectors...don't go any bigger than 100hp. You'll get excessive smoke if you do. Stick with ddp or JL machine (not sure if there building since the tragic death of Jon link) but you can find them used. DONT go with edge jammers. Cheap, but junk.

Ok? And your point on how this pertains to the op?
you said that edge boxes are junk!!! i never said anything about not tapping into the pump. but if i remember correctly people were having problems when they used there pump as a ground. he asked what box to run and i suggested one and you said it was .junk i was just showing the op instead of spending $2500 stacking boxes, the same power can be made with a single box.

Ok but you can also buy a TST and smarty combo for less than 1k easily if you know where to look. There all over the place. Myself and many others have had numerous problems with the edge comp boxes. That's why I'm speaking from experience, not hear-say.

I will adment I misunderstood you with grounding the box, as to tapping the the pump. My bad, but doesn't change my opinion on the product.

Those numbers you posted seam way high to me, to many unknowns. Head work, pump of choice, chargers, injectors. Whatever it may be, the op can't make a wise decision on that info by itself.

Thanks for the responses guys! I had a quad adrenaline on it for a few months but my tranny hated it so i sold it off to a guy i work with. As far as power and mods and what no go...

I dont want a smoke pig (like 99% of cummins nutswingers have/want)
I'm not chasing a HP number, ill take whatever i get.

I want something FUN to drive, something i don't have to continuously work on, something that doesnt require me watching 19 different gauges just to run to the store, abiltiy to tow when needed, and overall a decent mpg.

At the most ill be doing small injectors/turbo mods and a tranny to hold it. Just not sure on whats whats in the cummings world

1st thing would be a fuel pressure gauge if you don't already have one. This was the advice I got when I bought my 98, & quickly found out I had a dead lift pump. If I hadn't gotten a gauge & saw 0 fuel pressure, I'd probably have killed my VP. On exterior mods, I've seen a few 2nd gens with aftermarket one-piece clear headlights, & I think they look sweet. That's on my list. They'd probably look even better with a paint-matched bumper & grill.

Like the others have said get a fuel pressure gauge so the VP44 doesn't tank due to lack of pressure. AD makes a nice direct fuel pump replacement, you want more than 5 psi but not more than 20 psi of fuel pressure. Adding a fuel lube supplement will help protect the pump a bit as well. 24V aren't as plug and play as a CR so adding sticks helps even sub 400rwhp trucks. Luckily 24V sticks aren't too expensive, compared to 7.3s or any Common Rail engine.

Do you have a 47re or nv4500?

Like everyone else has posted do a gage to watch the fuel pressure. I drive a 99 dodge as my DD, It has a hotrod vp44 pump, RV275 injectors, trans upgrades with a billet suncoast conv and run a smarty for tuning. Truck has 212k miles, 100k since I bought it 4 years ago without a single problem other than batteries, brakes and balljoints. Best truck I have ever owned

you two guys are being the very cummins d-bags we love to hate..
How about you explain yourself. If that's what you think for giving him knowledgeable advise on a question the op asked about, so be it. At least the 2 of us (differences aside) are helping the op with the question he asked, unlike you who just decides to run your mouth.

If you want something cheap take the turbo silencing ring out. My buddy did It in his 24v and the turbo sounds way better like a semi but not overley anoying.
