Clean the residue off and see if it happens again. Sometimes the pressure will cause coolant to blow out the cap (15 psi I think) if coolant blows out frequently could be egr issue could be head gaskets.
Also, make sure your coolant level is not above the minimum line. Unless you have a sticker already that tells you that.
