Question for the tranny gooooroooos.
To convert a 99 f-450 2 wheel drive with a 4r100 to 4x4, will we need to change the mainshaft in the transmission? Or, can I just drop the tailhousing, bolt on the stock adaptor and transfer case? We have a 450 dumptruck with the 4.88 gears, and wanting to make it 4x4, and have the benefit of low range. Probly change it to 4.10 gears for a little better mileage.

In my research, the mainshaft has to go. Can't just swap tailshafts.

How involved changing it around is, I don't know...

I would ask down in the tranny forum, I'm sure Richter or one of the guys knows.

Probably easier getting a 4WD tranny.
Well, the truck has 287,000 miles, and I figured we'd get it rebuilt and swap mainshaft at the same time if need be.
I know on the c-6 everything is the same , you just use a 4x4 main shaft, and bolt up the tail housing adaptor from a 4x4 and your set. I did my own. I was really hoping they had the same main shaft. Then I could just unbolt the housing, and bolt in the new stuff without ever removing the transmission.
