This isn't the kind of clunk of the slip joint sticking, although I will grease when I get the chance.

Pinion only has a bout 1/4" maybe 5/16" play back and forth, is this normal?

I guess I should change that U-joint that's been in there for 2yrs and never greased :lookaround:

the average slop would be 6-10 thousands for new gears and I think 10-16 thousands for used gears on the ring gear.. I will have to look at some paper work to double check for your axle... Im not sure if your pinion has a crush sleave or shims, but I would also make sure that the pinion nut is tight atleast, Ive seen those back off, and or maybe your crush sleeve has colaped... I just geared and locked up a friends axle just yesterday, so I have the #s around here..

so you're saying there should be nearly imperceptable rotating back and forth movement of the pinion, in neutral, with the wheels stationary?

Every diff I've ever owned the drive shaft would move back and forth a little.

I'm pretty sure it's my u joint, I'm gonna find out though when I change it. Probably tomorrow.

Greg,

U joint is a cheap place to start. It fixed mine. I brought the drive shaft to NAPA and had them do the replacement. No hassle trying to do it without a press and cheap.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to explain, Its hard to diagnos a problem without feeling it for myself, but there should be minium slack in the pinion.. Now of course Its tight when its new but it will loosen up after the gears are broken in, bt not a lot

i too have some slop and a clunk and some "hesitation" when throttling up and releasing the throttle.....i have a little pinion slop up and down but nothing terrible. its got enough slop at throttle that it makes it slightly hard to drive. is there anything besides making sure the pinion nut is tight to do about this? kinda at a loss thoughts anything would be amazing. btw i replaced the clutch and made sure everything was extra tight when i put everything back togeather. it has done it since ive gotten the truck.....
