My old camera broke...and I'm looking to get a new one...but I don't want to go too overboard...need a few pointers of what would be good.

1. I don't want to spend more than $700 for the camera, and accessories(because it seems that you need SD cards too)

2. I don't want the camera to be so difficult to use that I need to take a class just to figure out how to turn it on.

3. I want to have a "burst" feature...(takes a ton of pics really fast)

any other pointers of what I should be looking for, and some explanations about lens, batteries, and other stuff would be greatly appreciated.

The camera on the left is the one I had,..and I loved it...did everything I needed...but it broke,...so I figured I would upgrade to the camera on the right...is it overkill from what I'm used too?...or would it be a good upgrade?

The one on the right seems to be a good package deal,...I just don't want to drop that cash and someone says.." dude...you could have gotten ALL that cheaper here(Best Buy, etc)"

FWIW, my girlfriends mom has the cannon rebel and it takes some damn good pictures. She has never had any camera experience and she can use it really well. She has also went out and bout a few different lenses for it. I think that the picture quality is really good on it.

Do NOT get the XS....that is now 4 Generations old....

If you get a DSLR, go with the XSi or Newer (T1i or T2i)..

Either Stay with P&S form factor, or step up to something along the Prosumer Lines.

Kodak is TOTAL JUNK, I am surprised you like it....

For you....going from the P&S Kodak to the DSLR Canon, would be a HUGE jump, in how to WORK the camera and features you would NEVER use....

I would suggest taking a look at the Nikon Coolpix P100....it is a killer P&S Camera with a HUGE Zoom and tons of features...

COOLPIX P100 | Nikon

Product Features
10.3 megapixels for stunning prints as large as 16 x 20 inches; backside illumination CMOS sensor
26x wide-angle optical zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens
Bright 3.0-inch vari-angle high resolution HVGA Clear Color Display
Full 1080p HD movie recording at 30fps; HDMI output
5-way VR Image Stabilization System; Smart Portrait System

Just a thought...I can give you more input if you are looking for more on the DSLR line...but expect to spend closer to $1000....

I shot with a Nikon D5000 and love it, but it is out of the range that you want to spend so I would look into either a rebel or a Nikon D3000. Both have every thing you want. The only problem with getting a DSLR is that lens can set you way back on your budget. Another nice camera is the Olympus PEN (Pentax has something like it also) it is a step between a DSLR and a point and shot but, it does not come with a pop-up flash.

With the type of photography that you would normally be shooting, if you were to buy a DSLR, you will want to look in to getting a high zoom len such as a 55mm- 200mm at least. And also a wide angle lens. I have a 35mm fixed lens that is wide angle that takes great shoots down the side of a truck.

Tank, Not a camera Guru but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. Consumer Reports Picked Three different Cannon models for its SLR ratings in the August issue. #1 EOS 70, #2 EOS Rebel T2i, #3 EOS Rebel T1i.

3 more good points

1. a DSLR has better burst speeds

2. A DSLR has low shutter lag(time between clicking the button to the time it actually takes a pic)

3. A DSLR camera's battery life is a lot more than a point and shoot.

...I was looking at the Nikon coolpix 100...and for about $200 more.....I can get the Canon Rebel DSLR Tsi w extra lenses, a bag, and memory cards...which still keeps me under my $700 budget.

Tank,

I replied to your PM...

1) Yes, some will have higher FPS (aka burst speeds)....I believe the XSi is 3.5 Frames Per Second
2) Yeap, same with Shutter Lag...
3) Camera battery is a MOOT point....some will last longer...some won't...you would still want to buy extras....

Never heard of the TSi.....

My next camera will be one of the Cannon eos or rebels. Ive got several Nikons now. My main gripe with the Nikons are battery life on the coolpix ones and lack of features on the D ones. Nikon d series seems to be allergic to any decent movie mode features.

After helping a customer with a Cannon get some movies off their computer they had made with their Cannon I was so impressived with the high school football movies quality picture wise and sound wise I will be going with a Cannon next time.

I'm curious also. What problems have you had with Nikon glass? I have bought and sold and used probably 25 diff nikon lenses and have never had a problem with them. You buy used?

Don't know that much about em myself. Just know I've got a fortune tied up in my wifes. She seems to like her cannon stuff. Think she has a 50d or something like that. Takes awsome pics. Only catch is the lenses. Like was said already, you can spend a fortune on them, but ya got to have them. She has about 4 lenses. Turns out we have about 1200 bucks in one just for low light. It's easy to get carried away. That's the only thing that took some getting use too. Swapping lenses. My wife would have to dig through that suitcase camera bag ,swap everything, then try to capture the moment. One things for sure, what ever camera you decide to go with ( Nikon/Canon )will be a huge upgrade over what you had. Good luck with it.

The one time I want you to be a post whore about a product and where you are buying it from and you clam up. I doubt any site sponsors sell cameras... how about filling us in on your good deal.
