Brake replacement instructions

9384 Views 59 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  00PSD1
hi guys

I am going to be replacing the brakes within the next week.

1.Does anyone know if the brake replacement procedure is different then the other superduties?

2. Does anyone know where I can find instructions online to replace the brakes on a F550? (i came up dry)

thanks,
Andrew

The guy from Hawk recommended either the ceramic or the super duty pads.

So here is what I am going to go with

1. Superduty pads
2. Cyro Powerslots If they make them for my truck if not the regular rotors
3. Stock Ford calipers

sound good? any problems with this setup?

thanks,
Andrew

I'm still trying to understand why you feel the need to replace the calipers.

Because if I dont I will be looking over my shoulders wondering if its going to affect how long my new brake setup lasts. I rather do everything at one time and not have to worry about a part that was not replaced.

Bro, calipers are not a wear and tear item like brakes and tires. They don't get replaced just because you're replacing the pads, and rotors and you're worried the calipers might affect your new brakes.

They won't.

Unless there is something wrong with the calipers, they'll be fine.

Seriously bro, applying your logic and your line of thinking regarding the calipers to the rest of the truck, you should be worried about the axles then too. And if you're worried about how the axles might affect your new brakes, you need to be worried about the springs...then of course there are the shocks.

Do you see what I mean? Your logic doesn't make sense unless the calipers are needing repair.

When your water pump goes out, will you also replace the radiator too, because you're worried about how the old radiator will affect your new water pump?

Calipers are not a wear and tear item. You don't replace them just because you're putting on new brakes.

Save your money for mods, not needless expenditures.

Calipers are an easy fix. Only difference between changing pads and caliper replacement is you unhook the hose and bleed. Calipers are NOT a wear item. When they leak or seize up, replace them. In the meantime, wirewheel the slide pins, wirebrush the bore lightly and regrease.
If you are going to replace anything just because you are worried it might hurt the brakes. Replace the caliper slide pins and the caliper mounting bracket. They are where the problems happen. Clean the pins, clean the pin bores and call it good.

After further thoughts I will do what you have suggested.....

Right now my truck is pulling to the right when I brake what would be causing this?

thanks,
Andrew
the things Arisley mentioned could be causing that....
My truck is pulling to the left when I brake hard so how would I fix that?

Which is it? To the left or to the right?

Either way, post number 8, 9, 11, 12, and 16 directly answered this question for you, regarding the possible culprit to your problem.

Post #16 (mine) even gave you a link to help you through the procedure of changing the caliper pins.

Here, reposted for you, is the link: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/cu.html

Once more, I hope that helps.

When I made my first post I misstyped The truck pulls to the right when I brake. I am going to print out the instructions you provided.

thanks,
Andrew
Check out the rest of Guzzles site while you are at it. You can learn a ton. Pay attention to the stuff in the left hand margin also.
To get Cyro rotors its an additional $190 for front and back + $527

Is it really worth it?

Andrew

I didn't think they made cryo rotors for the rear.

Either way, you only need the fronts to be cryo treated.

I've had a couple "smash-the-brakes-fast!" episodes while towing our 9000lb+ trailer, and the cryo treated rotors just shrugged it off like it was nothing.

I still have the OEM rotors on the rear, but I'll never put a non-cryo treated rotor on the front.

Stewart
1. If the fronts are cyroed and the rears are not Is their going to be uneven brake pad wear?

2. Should I get Superduty pads or LTS?

3. Are the superduty pads noisy?

4. How do I know if my calipers are bad?

5. How do I know if my bearings are bad?

thanks,
Andrew

anyone?^^^^
Update I just ordered the Front and Rear Powerslot Cryo rotors ;)

What parts should I order for the calipers? some of you guys were mentioning slide pins and mounting bracket but is this really necessary?

thanks,
Andrew
i cleaned and lubed my stock hardware and reused it....i did use the correct slide pin grease though, might not be a bad idea...
1. If the fronts are cyroed and the rears are not Is their going to be uneven brake pad wear?
Dude, are you kidding me? Are you actually asking this question?? Have you ever, in your lifetime, ever seen even wear between front and rear brakes on ANY vehicle???

Your front brakes do more than 70% of the stopping of your truck. Do you really think there's going to be even wear under those circumstances?

2. Should I get Superduty pads or LTS?
Either or. I think Hawk recommended the Super Duty pads because you have an F550, as opposed to an F250 or an Excursion like me.

3. Are the superduty pads noisy?
Dunno. Try them and let us know!

4. How do I know if my calipers are bad?
Eliminate all other possibilities for your pulling to the left problem.

5. How do I know if my bearings are bad?
What's happening that makes you think the bearings are bad?

I mis typed the truck sometimes pulls to the right.....

Stewart
Sometimes when I am turning slowly I hear a grinding noise What would that be?

I ordered front and back cyros today..... tommorow I am going to order the Superduty pads

thanks,
Andrew
It looks like all my brake parts are going to be here today. I just got my pads so I am waiting on the rotors.

The truck seems not to pull any under regular braking

Anything else I need to buy?

thanks,
Andrew
