hi guys

I am going to be replacing the brakes within the next week.

1.Does anyone know if the brake replacement procedure is different then the other superduties?

2. Does anyone know where I can find instructions online to replace the brakes on a F550? (i came up dry)

thanks,
Andrew

If you are just changing the pads all you need to do is remove the old ones collapse the piston and put new pads in really simple job.

should be pretty straight foreward. . .basically like a standard superduty. . . just don't forget you got a couple extra lug nuts to take off though:ford:

Another member (NWSUPRD) and I are going to be doing this. I want to do everything at once so I dont have to mess with my brakes again for a very long time.

Is their anything different I have to do on a F550 versus a F 350?

thanks,
Andrew

If your calipers are fine, do not replace them. They should last the lifetime of the truck. If you want to replace something extra, replace the slide pins.

Andrew, if you are going to work on your own truck, go buy a good manual. It will give you directions for everything. The manual mod is the first mod any owner of any vehicle should do.

When I sell a vehicle, the manual goes with it. Also can be used to cushion spare tire and jack noise and a good place to store it.

Well, not in our trucks. Really, buy a manual.

I haven't had to buy a new caliper in a long time. I do usually take mine apart and reseal them. If I don't feel like going through all that work I do peel the boots off and clean everything very well.

Don't bother turning your rotors, junk them and buy new ones. I usually take about .001-.003" or so off the new rotors to true them up as depending on where you get them they may have warped slightly from storage.

Also make sure you lube the slides real well.

What do you think of this setup? Hawk SuperDuty pads with Powerslot rotors and stock ford calipers.

My truck is pulling to the left when I brake hard so how would I fix that?

thanks,
Andrew

Grease the slides\pins, bleed the system.

Depends on WHY it's pulling to the left. Caliper piston issue, slide pin issue, rotor issue, bearing issue? You'll have to inspect the old parts as you take them off to see which one of those issues if any, is causing your issue.

I'd also recommend changing the brake fluid in the entire system. I do that in the juice braked stuff I own about every other year. Keeping good fluid in the system is another reason I think I've not had to change a caliper yet on any of my stuff.

If the tire was low it would pull all the time.

Make sure you get the cryo treated rotors from Powerslot, not the regular rotors.

Here's Guzzles how-to on replacing the front brakes:

And his how-to on replacing the caliper pins:
http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/cu.html

You can see, based on the first paragraph of the Ford Professional Service Tech website (cut and pasted below for you) that the brake instructions are the same for the F250/350/450 and 550.

Yes I am sure it has nothing to do with the accident.

Thanks Stewart for the instructions. What is wrong with the regular rotors?

Do some superduties have ABS in the rear and others dont?

thanks,
Andrew

Correct. Actually, I believe all of them have at least RABS, some have 4WABS.

On their website it is a little confusing because the 2wd F550s 99-2004 are w/o rear abs then it says 2002-2004 with abs.

then for the 99-2004 4wd F550 it says all w/o rear abs

mine is a 4wd 2000 F550

Does my truck have rear abs?

thanks,
Andrew
