So I'm on my way to work. Just cruisin at 70 mph getting ready to pass some cars- I was running late for work. As I slow down I look in my rear view mirror and see SO much white smoke that I can't see anything. I pull over and pop the hood and holy crap I've never seen so much oil. I blew out the line that goes to the drivers side head. It blew at the fitting on the head. This line was not leaking at all prior to this. I'm changing the lines and strip the fitting on the HPOP. I take a close look and no hump on the back cover! I had the 15 degree pump. It's like it was meant to strip so I can get the 17 degree. Got it back together this afternoon and she's purrin' like a 7.3 should. The line blowing out was a surprise because no leak prior or any sort of warning. I've never even had the lines off before. I've used up about a case of degreaser to clean all the oil out from under the hood. I wonder how badly the people behind me got sprayed? Oh well, just wanted to share. How common is it for these lines to blow?

I bet it's a 17º internally, even though it doesn't have the hump.

I've blown an o ring, but never seen the fittings blow out.

You have to make sure it's not cross threaded going into the pump, that's easy to do.

I know what thats like. It happened to me when I was moving from boise to phoeinex. I was stressed out already when that happend. I was also had a lot less knowledge on the 7.3 at the time so it cost me 600 for the dealer to fix. Just like you I never had the lines off before. it was the first thing to break on the truck since i bought it.

Happened to me once too. Had about 60K miles on my truck, and my wife and I were driving in the middle of nowhere Alabama on a Sunday. Truck started losing power going up a hill. Made it over and kept cruising. Next hill the truck dropped speed and the check engine light came on. Pulled over and got out and saw oil pouring out from underneath the truck. So I shut it off and opened the hood. Oil went EVERYWHERE, all over the engine bay, underneath the truck, and coated the entire bed, tailgate, rear end, etc.

The fact that we were no where near civilization didn't help, and being a Sunday just made it worse. After an hour on the phone, we finally located a wrecker service to tow my truck. He showed up 45 minutes later and towed my truck an hour to the nearest Ford dealership, which of course was closed on a Sunday. We dropped it off and walked across the street to the only motel in town, which was the worst place I ever stayed in. I've slept in deer blinds that were cleaner.

Monday morning the dealership started working on my truck, and it took them 5 hours to finish the job. Got back on the road and all was well again. The dealer techs said that I lost 10 quarts of oil when that line blew.

BBB and Pocket - feel for ya. Been there done that. Split the PS HPO hose at head. Oil from radiator to rear bumper. White smoke covered 6 lanes of the interstate. Towwed back home, put on new hose and 14-1/2 qts of oil. Who ever said these beasts shut down when you get 3 to 4 qts low on oil is just total BS'g. Glad you're back running.

Thank god it didn't catch fire cause we would have to hear about how the stock ford lines will burn everyone's trucks down until the end of time.

I've had FOUR serious hpos leaks! The worst I was out of town and had to figure this shiat out on the side of the road. It lost enough oil to stop running... that time it was 2 gallons low!

Lucky for me, I'm plagued with bad luck... so I ALWAYS have tools. I carry a complete hpos system oil rings along with my spare cps AND 2 gallons of oil  Just the other week, I lost an o-ring around the corner from work. Replaced it and was on my way... I've never been stranded... but it's gotten REALLY damn annoying :swordfight:

The only time I ever break down on the road is when I work on my truck and don't take the time to put my tools back in the truck. I can do just about anything on my truck with my truck box.
