Alrighty, its time to move from outside mods to inside mods. I want to upgrade the stock speakers, add a sub and amp, dyna mat the interior and add a nice dvd/ cd player. Im thinkin 1 high end 10" will be adequate, i dont need to shake windows 3 blocks away. Is there a nice box that will fit behind the rear seat w/o sliding it all the way forward? For the stock replacement speakers, id rather not use an amp to push them. I want good sound quality but dont want the mess of a 2nd amp. Whats your brand preferences? Also whats a nice sub amp these days? I used to run rockford and xtant, but i dont even know if either of those are still available lol. Then of course i'll need all the good cables to hook it all up:D

For all those who skipped the post, here's the cliff notes: :D

What 10" sub?
What dvd/ cd player?
What sub amp?
What replacement speakers?

Budget: preferably under 3k, but can go a bit higher if need be.

Edit- Oh god i read this and its almost an andrew-ish post LOL. Wait... no i think we're ok. I dont think i can suck a shop towel through an amp after the install:D:doh:

LOL

Well I have just over 850 in my setup but I got the front components from a friend.
Here's what I have:

Kenwood H/U
MP3, Sirius, HD Radio capable. 5v preamp outs, sub control, 3 band EQ, remote.

MB Quart components
I did a little custom work to my doors to make 6.5" speakers fit and installed these. Have the mids and crossovers mounted in the doors. Tweeters are mounted by the "sail panel" on the flat part of the door handle, in front of the window controls and angled toward the driver/passenger.
I have the crossovers attenuated to the highest settings. I like highs.

(2) JL Audio 10's
2 JL 10W1 subs mounted in a sub zero enclosures box made specifically for 99-03 crew cab super duties.
Sub zero's website is www.subzeromfg.com real top quality stuff.

JL mono block amp
Can't remember the wattage right now but it's a monoblock JL amp and pushes these subs hard at only about 70%

All in all a really good sounding combo I think. I love the component sounds, music just sounds so much different, clearer, more alive; better. For the kind of music I prefer Rock, Country, etc it sounds great. If I were a hard core rapper I'd need way more sub, but these 10's are an awesome compliment to the component sound I was looking for. Tight, quick hitting bass, not tubby.
The rear speakers are stock for now. My goal is to eventually get a set of Diamond Audio components for the front, and move the current MB Quarts to the rear.

So figure 350 for a good set of front components and you're just at 1100, if you want another set for the back (rears are ok but component back there would finish it of) then 1500. Only thing I am missing right now is an amp to run the components, that would be a couple hundy.
It will sound way better when I get the components I want up front DIAMONDS and an amp to run them.

You could take the rest of your budget and scratch the head unit I have, and get yourself a nice DIN 2 screen with nav, camera etc and probably still stay under 3G

For just the items you listed, you should be right around $1250-$1400 w/ out any of it installed. You could easily be under $3000 if you shop around.

I would get an amp for the speakers, they will sound so much better with a little more power.

Call the person below and tell him what you are looking for in terms of sound. He is a really good guy and will give you great prices. He has talked me out of expensive items I did not actually need. He won't remember my name but tell him you were refered by someone from the diesel truck forums, he will know what you are talking about.

I've been looking hard at the Kenwood DNX7100 DVD/NAV unit for my truck, and I'll probably pick one up sometime this week or next. It uses Garmin navigation software, and you don't have to mess with navigation DVD's every time you want to map out directions. All navigation info for US and CA are stored on the hard drive inside the unit, and can be updated with just an SD card. You can also map out directions on the go instead of stopping and setting the E-brake like on the Pioneer Z2. Also it will play MP3's directly from a USB drive, and of course it's a DVD player as well.

They retail for around $1300, but you can shop online and find them easily for less than $1000.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth and what I'm putting in my truck next. I'm also thinking about a single 10" sub behind the rear seat. So keep suggestions for those coming.

Curtis is this the one your talking about?

Looks like one sweet unit!
Yes that's the one. I was at a local car stereo shop the other day comparing this Kenwood with the Pioneer AVIC-Z2. Personally I liked the Kenwood much better, and it's several hundred $$$$'s cheaper than the Pioneer. I wanted to get it so my wife and I can have some entertainment as we drive through I-70 traffic on the way to the ski slopes every weekend. 2 hours in a truck can go by much quicker if we're watching something like Tommy Boy. :D

I read somewhere that with the Pioneer unit teh ebrake had to be set before you could change any nav stuff. That sounds like a hassle to me.

Yeah I posted that earlier ;) There is a software upgrade that you can install to override the NAV issue. But getting around the e-brake switch on a Kenwood is much easier.

BTW Luke, I just bought mine a little while ago. Should be here in a few days and I'll get it in my truck sometime next week :postwhore2: Now I just need to find a sub, amp, and build a box.

They are all easy to get around. You basically just need to ground that wire out that connects to the e-brake and it will think it's set.

I'm telling you, once you find out what you want and get the best price you think you can, give Taun a call. He will most likely beat that price by quite a bit. He works for a very large audio retail shop in Cally (I believe that's where it's at). He/ they build competition type installs.

Well i ended up going with:

Clarion MAX675VD2 2-Din DVD w/ remote navigation 30gig hard drive
Diamond audio front replacement speakers
Phoenix Gold rear speakers
Phoenix Gold RSD300.4 Amp
Diamond 1000.1 mono amp
Diamond 10" top of the line sub
Custom box
remote start/ keyless entry
due to being waaaay over budget they are only dyno matting the front doors, but i will finish dyno matting the rest of truck when my wallet recovers. Also getting everything installed, i dont have the time or patience to do it myself. I will also eventually upgrade the Phoenix gold fronts and amp up to a diamond stuff. Work is being done at Malibu's in Moore, OK next Thursday!

Go with 10" Bazooka tubes see if you can mount them behide the rear seat of you ca put them in front of the rear seats

I had a 1992 chevy reg. cab, short bed, 4.3L V6, 5 speed, 3.08 rearend had the cat cut flowmasters duels crome tips out the back, K&N with custom cold air, jet chip, 16in AR rim mastercraft GT tires 10ins wide, black new paint, and 2 grand in a system 2 amps two 8in bazoka tubes and two 12in alpines

the alpines started smokin I parked my truck thinkin it was my engine got out popped the hood nothing look up saw fire I ran because i thought it was my gas tank just filled up nope it was that 12in alpine behind me it took the fire department 45 mins to put it out and it was 50 feet from the station

just saying it can happen at least with a bazooka tube you can throw it out if it were to catch fire

You miiiiight wanna go up a couple posts. I already made my decision..... Bazookas are not what i want. I want sound quality, i dont want- loud, window rattling, distorted bass (yes im getting old lol). It will be professionally installed, so id better not have to worry about fire. Did i mention i cant wait to hear the new beats? lol
