Air Dam Installed

8521 Views 76 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  jopes
I finally shook off the lazies and got my super-MPG air dam installed tonight. It still has the layout lines on it, but I fueled up so I can get an MPG test going.

Clearance: 1" above grade.

Pix and reports to follow.

Re: Air Dam Installeded

Is this gonna look like a skirt on a hover craft? LOL
Re: Air Dam Installeded

If it works, does it matter what it looks like?
Re: Air Dam Installeded

Two tankful average = 26.70 MPG.

Dayum!!!! What was it just before the fairing?
Re: Air Dam Installeded

The tank before the air dam went on it was 24.6 MPG.

The thing seems to work but I need to do some lateral stiffening. But it is parking curb-proof. And dead dog proof.

Next spring I'll have side curtains and some belly covers (can't cover the whole bely and with side curtains I don't really need them) to see if I can clean her up yet some more.

I can always tell when I've made a good aero move. The truck gets quieter in terms of road noise and I can hear the engine better.

Pretty please.... I wanna see what it looks like.

Re: Air Dam Installeded

did you fix that camera yet?? :D

are you planning on using more of this conveyor belting for your side skirts?...there's a nice rib under the doors to bolt to if that's what you have in mind...
Re: Air Dam Installeded

I intend to use the mounting holes for the running boards to mount the side skirts.

It would take quite a bit of material to make an air dam for the truck in your avatar. LOL.

On edit: Can't make the image linked above to display. Sigh.

Hummm only if i knew that truck.... i just found that pic online and thought it was quite hilarious
WOW... get any squirrels scooped up yet?
Nope. It steps right over road kill of any description.
Very nice Dave, as long as it's functional.

What about the mirrors, have you done any testing with smaller mirrors?

Greg
How bout taking the mirrors off and putting in some little cameras? that and deleting the door handles and putting in some electronic pop locks?

Dave sez:
These are on my radar screen. I saw an SAE paper where two GM engineers determined that 17% of the aero drag on a W-body car (GrandPrix, Monte Carlo, etc) came from the side view mirrors. And those are relatively small, well-faired mirrors. One can only imagine how much drag is generated by the elephant ears on a Super Duty. Problem is that with my fairing I am blind as a bat to the rear without my side view mirrors. To replace them I’ll have to have a system with at least four cameras.

When the time comes I’ll chase down some CCTV specialist. I have seen these used on some big RVs and custom coaches.

I don’t trust those things. What I want are the faired latch handles used on airliners.

greg sez: dave should ask for some time in a wind tunnel :poke:
so dave, ive been called a liar for this, but with my 8" lift and 37's i get 22 mpg at 55mph. do you think its possible? oh and its hand calculated also. i was thinking that aero wise the air is going right over the axles instead of being deflected up into the undercarriage. does this sound right to you?
oh thats with 3:73's also. i only run 1500 rpms at 56 mph.
