Last year I messed up my rearend housing at a pull and it spun the pumpkin so that it was pointed upwards. Well I don't want it to happen again so I am going to weld the castiron pupmkin to the mild steel axle tubes. I lan on doing probably like 3 1.5 inch stiches. Has anyone here done this? I have see one or 2 in pics that were welded, but I can not remember who did it. I plan on cleaning it real well and removing a small amount of material for a root pass then I am going to do a wider cover pass on top of that. I am using a nickel iron alloy electrode as well. Just seeing if anyone has any tips on doing this.

I have done it, on trucks and our drag cars that make a bunch of power. We weld them completely around. You are on the right track though. Sounds good, do it to it.

I've done it on several different types of axles. I like to preheat a bit, espically on the pumpkin and make several passes. No big deal, just takes a bit of time.

If you have mild-steel wire no.

I wouldn't recommend using a wire feed for that application anyway. You'll get a better product using a good rod for joining cast iron to mild steel pipe and preheating the pumpkin.
