Anybody have ideas on this conversion? My E4OD is all sorts of funk, the guy before me put a weird shift kit in it so it skips 2nd and slams 3rd. Looking to either rebuild the E4OD, or upgrade to 4R100. Anybody know what all would be required to convert it over? Or if it’s even worth swapping?

You would have to change the electronics and pump to a non pwm pump. they are basicly the same trans. just the 4r100 has some upgrades which can be added to the e4od. check out dieselsite.com they have a e4od that's built right with the upgrades to make it as good as a 4r100.

If the 4R100 is an early '99, it is a direct replacement. Nothing needs to change. If it is a later 4R100 you need to install an orifice in the pump body and change the solenoid body.

Just upgrade the E4OD, I'm sure in the long run, will be much less headache, and will do the same thing as a 4R.

As far as rebuilding the E4OD, the previous owner installed some funky shift kit, would that affect the ability to be rebuilt at all, or is the core still useable? Only issues I have with it is under part throttle, if you get past 30mph in second, it will go straight to fourth and shift violently, same if you’re in 3rd and get to 45, it will skip 4th and go straight into OD. My 96 F350 just has a firm shift from 1st to 2nd, then it’s smooth from there. Would a programmer affect transmission performance by chance? My 96 has an evolution programmer running on the first setting, and the truck in question is a 97 F250HD bone stock.

Well OD and 4th are the same gear, are you sure your not feeling torque converter lock up?

If the previous owner installed a "shift kit" then those changes are in the valve body. Some shift kits can be un done, some cannot. Many of them require drilling larger holes in the valve body, stiffer springs in the accumulator, etc
So in many cases it might be beneficial to start with a stock valve body and upgrade that to your liking

the rest of the transmission can be rebuilt like normal, it would be helpful to know what shift kit was installed and if the truck is using a chip
Your trans builder should be able listen to the issues you are having and address them when they "rebuild" or update your valve body

Putting a 4R in an earlier truck has been done thousands of times. There are a few changes. To use the OBS PCM some changes to the transmission will be needed. Or you can do the SD PCM swap which requires some repinning of the harness anda little wiring and sensor swapping. Or run a stand alone transmission controller which is the most costly solution. If you order a build 4R you may be able to have them build you a turn key 4R ready to install in a OBS. There is a solenoid that has to be changed as well as pump mods as the 4R uses a PWM pump. I also have read there will be a sensor or two on the 4R that will be unused if you run it with the OBS PCM.

Also to add from doing some searching.

The 4R100 has a turbine speed sensor and an output speed sensor. The E4OD doesn't have either one of these. If you just ignore the sensors the trans will be fine.

Also about the pump mods. The latter 4R100s had the PWM pump the E99 4R100 has the same on or off pump as the E4OD.

I do believe you do need to swap out the solenoid pack on the 4R100. Do some reading on the forums it has been talked about in hundreds of threads.

So there you go pretty simple to run a 4R100 in an OBS.
