86 F250 with a DT360 and 6 speed

29100 Views 34 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Merc460
I figured I should start a thread on this. The truck has been parked for 3 years and I have S L O W L Y been gathering parts. Last year I picked up a badly rotten 2000 Superduty with a 6 speed. Last light I scored a 1990 DTA 360 with supposedly 90k on it.

I am open to suggestions on motor mounts and how to locate the engine. I am going with a Sterling 10.25 rear and Dana 60 front. 3.55 gears. I haven't quite figured out how to get my mechanical speedo to work with the 6speed/ NV271?(manual t-case). I am hopping for 5-600hp

This is going to be a toy for nice weather driving and I want to go pulling (exhibition) and KILL the cummins guys

O. the truck it is going in

Brad - Been looking forward to this build thread for a while. Should be awesome like all your builds.

Regarding the speedo check out what the hot rod guys do. They make a box that takes an electronic speedo signal and converts it to mechanical drive. They make different boxes. Still seem like too much money at $300 bucks, but gets it done. Bunch of companies make them. I pulled this one up off ebay quick.

You will find that no two swaps are the same here is how I mounted my engine.
I am using a E40D and the Carson Adapter plate

Not trying to derail this thread but I see that a DT360 is a very popular swap. I was wondering why its such a popular swap? it seems like there are more common and powerful motors out there?

its really not very common of a swap, but has come a bit more popular in the last few years. reason people want them, the motors are beyond bullet proof, in stock form, and bone stock internals are reported to withstand a power level most will never make it to.

Hypermax(the INTERNATIONAL GURUs) say the STOCK bottom end will hold north of 2000HP, YES I said 2000!!.

A billet block Cummins can barely do that.

Also. I didn't want ANOTHER "me too" swap aka Cummins swap. I was going to go with a power stoke swap(even have the donor truck) but I like my 86 interior and wanted to keep it(I am even plan on adapting the old 4 speed shifter to the ZF6. So going with another mechanical engine was the logical choice

Thanks for the pics. I went to your photo bucket account and went over the pics. Did you have to clearance the firewall at all?

I plan on using Carson adapter as well. What does that uses? A 6.0 starter?

You don't happen to have any numbers for the oil, fuel and coolant filters, do you? My coolant filter is actually rotted in half. The oil filters don't look much better

i know it! I would love to stumble upon one of those motors one day. if i do, it will be going into my 97.
Sounds like a pretty cool build. The only downside I can see is the weight of the DTA 360. It's doable for sure, but if memory serves me correctly aren't they like 3 - 500 lbs heavier than the 7.3 ? It seems like it would make an already nose heavy truck even more lop-sided. However, if you're not a big off roader, that wouldn't be too big of an issue and the d60 can handle it fine. One other plus (once again going off of memory here) I think the DTA Is a wet sleeve block, his too is a plus in my opinion.
From my research the DT weighs 1275lbs.

A power stoke weighs 920lbs

So 355 additional pounds. That is like adding a winch bumper.

but remember. My 86 only weighs 6400lbs with me in it right now(6.9 and 4 speed)

I did have to clearance the fire wall, but just to make getting the valve cover off a little easier I still have the stock heater box in place. I will get you the filter # tomorrow when I am back at the shop. I can't remeber if its a 7.3 starter or 6.0 I think 7.3 but I will check the # tomorrow as well.

Thanks for the knowledge! that seems unbelievable! when you google them there no too much out there. How is that much power attained from them? and best of luck man that sounds like its gonna be a pretty nice sleeper type truck and it would be nice to see somebody whoop a cummins with an 80's ford and barely any smoke...
Where did you find your donor considering I'll be looking for an identical one for wiring and electronic parts in not to long.
Just here to watch

Just like any diesel. MORE air and MORE fuel. The thing that makes the DT so much stinger than the cummins is the design. Wet sleeves nd the main crank bolts along with the MUCH stouter block design.

Thanks again
That clearencing of the firewall doesn't look too bad at all. As in it doesn't look extreme. If I remember right on my 89 there wasn't much going on behind there either to cause issues. I'm assuming it's similar on all the 80-97 trucks.

Brad you gonna pull the 86 down to the frame while you do this?
The truck will be put together then run for one season to work any bugs out, then tore COMPLETELY apart and restored
Small step tonight. Got a half ass engine stand made, filters changed and fired it up.
