I know the tach pickups on the cam shaft position sensor in the 7.3L PSD, the tach pick up on the 7.3L IDI monitors of off the crankshaft. If I'm not mistaken the Cummins also monitors off of the crank. Anyone know if monitoring of of the crank in the IDI would read correctly for the tach in the cluster on the F550? or would my tach read 1/2 the actual engine RPM if at all?

IDI picks up the signal off the IP drive gear, which is driven off the camshaft.

Ah Thanks ^_^ learned something today thought it had a sensor on the crank, so i should be able to get a tach signal that will accurately drive the f550's tach.

the tach makes things convenient when setting the rpm to run the air compressor, the air compressor stalls unless the engine is running at 1200-1500 RPM.

From what I've seen, no one has found a way to run a aftermarket gauge. Just the cluster from the IDI trucks.
Maybe you could build a arduino or similar to convert the signal to be used with the newer cluster.

I wonder what would happen if i connected the tach sensor to the cam sensor wires, the added a potentiometer into the wire that feeds the tach from the pcmand adjust the pot till the tach reads relatively accurate. From my understanding the pcm processes the inputs for the tach and speedometer, and gauges are basically just ammeters. I have access to a photo tachometer we use for setting fan speeds and idle speeds in heavy equipment to get things close.

edit this wont work either the psd dont count gear teeth like the idi does, thought i was onto something at first with the psd having 97 teeth and the IP on the IDID having 106 teeth

Wonder if I could do the cummins swap trick and have 4 grooves machined into the balancer and use a pick up there to get my sensor signal from there.

You could maybe go for one of the aftermarket units that work off the alternator.

Was looking at the dakota digital converter that works off the alternator or any magnetic pickup. That I believe should work from either the tach pickup or the alternator.

Well emailed Dakota Digital, they said their converter is unable to drive a diesel tachometer, and only works with a gas tach.
I thought the tach themselves were identical just the scales were different guess the wiring inside them are different.

I can't say for PSD up, but Iirc the IDI years of diesel tachs were actually different from gassers.
