I am hoping that some one can help me. I have a 96 F250. It has started acting starnge. I will be driving and it will cough and sputter and almost die. And some times it will just die. The truck has 285k. It will also some times start smoking really bad (black smoke) and almost lose power at about the 23-2500 rpm range.

When mine did that, it turned out it was the CPS (cam position sensor). I got two and put the spare in the glove box.

:whs:

This would be a good first thing to try. It is an easy replacement and they are cheap (around $25 at the dealership). Even if it does not fix your problem, you will have a spare for when the CPS does actually fail.
