I read an article stating that a 5.4 transmission has fewer clutches than a 6.0 transmission.
I recently came across a 6.8 low mileage transmission, and wondered if it was a direct replacement for the 6.0 transmission???

It cannot handle the torque of the diesel the differences are more than just clutches. Some hard part are different. What’s wrong with your unit?

Yes, it is a direct replacement. The only two things that are different are the torque converter and the intermediate one way clutch.

The torque converter won't work with a 6.0L for a couple reasons. The intermediate one way clutch is better in the 6.8L trans, so no worries there.

Thanks for the info Mark, I later found it was a 2004-which is listed as a 4R100 until it was changed in 2005...
Do you know if the 5.4 transmissions are a lighter duty as I had read, or are they the same as 6.0, and 6.8 after 2004?

Thanks for your reply Matthewd11. Mine worked fine until I was headed out for the last camping trip of the year to southern Ohio. Got stuck in heavy traffic/construction on the south side of Cleveland. Apparently my alternator went out, and before I realized it, I had lost all power-including all gauges. By the time traffic was moving, and I could pull off at an exit, the engine was running rough, and I could feel the trans shifting erratically. Didn't help that I was pulling a 7 ton trailer.
Anyway, eventually got going again, and trans would't shift above 4th gear, and tow/haul flashing. Turned around, and made the 90 mi. trek back home, re-learned the trans a couple of times, but eventually faced facts and dropped the pan to find a big black surprise in the bottom and a magnet that looked like a Chia Pet...

I guess my best bet is to find a decent 6.0 transmission, or rebuild the one I have.
I'm just glad this all happened before I sold our extra vehicle.

You can use a trans out of a 6.4 but you have to use a 6.0 converter. I’m not 100% (about 60% sure) but you might be able to use a 6.4 flex plate and converter.

The 5.4L version of both the 4R100 and 5R110W are lighter duty than the 6.0L and 6.8L transmissions.

The diesel changed from the 4R100 to the 5R110W in 2003.25 along with the change from 7.3L to 6.0L. Both gas engines changed from the 4R100 to the 5R110W in 2005.
