First things first is the transmission called the zf5 for the idi and secondly is it a straight bolt up and run if I put that “zf5” into my 1995 7.3

yes that trans will work. you may need a different clutch disc though. depends on the spline count on the input shaft.

I took a zf5 from an 87 6.9 diesel and swapped it into a 97 with no problems. Didn't even have to change the clutch. The IDI transmission is rated a little lower... 420 ft-lbs instead of 470 ft-lbs. I personally wasn't worried about the difference.

thanks for that CJ. i was not sure if the 42 and 47 had the same spline count.
