Hey guys, I'll be swapping my 10.5 into Shamu pretty soon, and while I have both axles out, I want to swap the 4.10s AND TrakLok differential (out of my existing 10.25, oem gears and carrier), into the new 10.5 (with 3.73 gears and an open differential). But all the info online leads me towards a ton of conflicting info on bearing thicknesses etc.

Will I be able to pull the carrier/ring gear, pinion, bearings and all, out of the 10.25 and just drop it into the 10.5? Obviously with new seals and crush sleeve, and rechecking gear mesh. Or will I run into shimming issues and fitment problems?

Thanks guys.

Yukon gear and axle shows them using the same open carriers but different bearing kits. I think I would try to swap the gear sets. Since your using the 10.25 gears in a 10.5 housing, ring gear clearance should not be an issue. Good luck look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Yeah the 10.25 is actually measured at 10.375", and they're so close that most manufacturers just sell the same ring and pinion for both rearends. I just hope that if I use all the same bearings and everything, that itll all go in with no other parts required.

That would be no problem if the housings were actually identical inside (ie distance from pinion bearing to carrier center etc. Size of pinion races). I guess I'll find out

I’m thinkin there is a difference on the bearing outer diameter and or the race. If you can use the 10.5 bearings with your 10.25 carrier you should be fine. I believe the pinion bearings are the same

I believe the pinion bearings are different, that was one of the upgrades from the 10.25-10.50
The inner pinion bearing is larger on the 10.50.

Everything else will fit , no problem

Buy a installation kit and on my 10.25s I convert from the stupid crush sleeve to a spacer and shims to set preload.

I think the pinion bearing is only different with the ID, and the pinion is smaller OD. So if I keep the correct bearing with the correct pinion, I should be safe?

Or am I thinking about it wrong?
