When is it necessary to weld the cam gear?
What is involved in getting to it? Can it be done in the truck, does the radiator need to come out?
Thanks, help is appreciated!

If it's a factory assembled motor still, I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're having issues eating cam sensors.

To do it you'll be pulling the motor, so you can pull the front cover.

Most guys just do it for insurance while they have the motor apart.

We weld them in three spots. My first engine had to come apart because of a stupid mistake of not welding the cam gear on. It was the stock cam, never been seperated from the gear. It made three dyno passes within 200 miles of getting it running, the next day it started eating cam sensors. LOL

I have welded every gear on every motor since then... Even stock cams.

The one I saw pics of had a weld all the way around it. I bet you could get by with 4 or 5 spots though.

The motor has to come out to remove the front cover.

You have to pull the oil pan to remove the front cover, you have to remove the motor to remove the oil pan.
