Gears?

Just to curious to get everyones opinion on doing a gear swap. Since I have gone to 35" tires I'm seriously considering swapping to 3.73's. I have a like new set out of my 06' so I won't be buying gears but by doing this swap it puts the engine back to the stock RPM range since the stock tires were 33's. I'm not overly concerned with gas mileage as this isn't a daily driver but I would like to think that it wouldn't hinder it. In fact it might possibly help improve it...at least in town since in theory it shouldn't take as much power to take off and I would think it would tow a bit better with 15k plus. Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Gears?

i have no educated info on this really.... but i know the axles are a little wider on the newer trucks.... is the differential itself the same to where you could use the same gears? just a thought.... also if you have the 3.55s already i dont think it would be much of a difference really swapping to the 3.73.... if you have 3.31 you could tell a diff though.... but mine has the 3.31 and ive pulled 20K trailer with it and 20s on 34s and it still had plenty balls.... i would just put a mild tune on it and call it a day personally....

Re: Gears?

I realize I won't notice a difference. That's not what I'm trying to accomplish. The only reason I'm even considering this is because I already have the gears, if I didn't I wouldn't even think of changing them. Again, my reasoning was to try and put the drivetrain closer to the factory settings based on RPM since I went to a (technically) 2" larger tire plus I feel it would be easier for it to turn the bigger tires. Thanks again for the input.

Re: Gears?

call a driveline or 4x4 shop to make sure they will work and you will have to make sure to shim them right on especially since theyre used..... let us know how it does and get some good mpg #s before so you can see if/how if was affected...

Granded this isn't apples to apples but I went from 3.73's to 4.30's in my '06 6.0L with 35's and lost .5 mpg so hopefully my outcome will be the same if not better.
