Teachers Unions

http://www.wsau.com/news/articles/20...ing-bill-state

Uffta! This is getting hairy here in this state. One a very good friend of mine, his wife is a teacher, and she is PO'ed, and my mother in law is a 'the lunch lady" and she is PO'ed. and I am sitting back and soaking it all in. My close friend is pleased this is happening to them. We think on the same wavelength (both farmers). Is this happening anywhere else? Scott Walker has really ruffled some feathers and he means business.

Just my opinion.

Re: Teachers Unions

I'm guessing that this is what you're talking about?

Anti-Union Vote (click here)

Quote:
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin lawmakers are prepared to pass a momentous bill that would strip government workers of nearly all collective bargaining rights over the loud objections of thousands of teachers, students and prison guards who packed the Capitol for two days of protests.

The nation's most aggressive anti-union proposal has been speeding through the Legislature since Republican Gov. Scott Walker introduced it a week ago. After clearing a major legislative hurdle Wednesday night, it was headed to votes in the Senate and Assembly.

Up to 20,000 people filled the Statehouse on Wednesday, cheering, singing and chanting in demonstrations unlike any seen in Madison for decades. Their numbers included many families and teachers from the Madison school district, which was forced to close after more than 40 percent of its 2,600-union covered employees called in sick.
Quite frankly, I didn't know that it would be legal to outlaw the ability to collective bargain.

Only for government workers as it turns out.

I thought that there were protections against doing that (I've been through a few union organizing drives), except I didn't realize it only applies to private companies.....and not public employees.

NLRB (click here)

Quote:
The rights of private sector employees to pursue collective bargaining are protected by the National Labor Relations Act, Bender said. Public employees are not guaranteed such Constitutional rights by the states, although President John Kennedy signed a law in 1962 to guarantee collective bargaining rights for unions doing business with the federal government.

"No, I don't think there's any constitutional guarantee that even if the state unions want to contest this ... that that's a required right," said Bender, who is not a member of a teacher's union. "The idea is that in the public sector, the (state) legislature has the power of the purse strings. Really, the full power resides with the legislature."

Cheryl Maranto, chair and associate professor of management at Marquette University, agreed that the new law probably will withstand a legal challenge.

"I think legislatively, they probably have the power to do it. Public sector labor law is pretty much the creature of the state legislature," Maranto said.

I found this interesting.

Quote:
However, experts say one aspect of the bill could be troublesome for Walker. After the West Allis Professional Police Association, the Milwaukee Professional Firefighters and the Wisconsin Troopers Association donated to Walker's election campaign, he decided to exclude police officers, firefighters and officers of the State Patrol from the bill. In other words, they will retain their full collective bargaining rights, while prison guards, game wardens and others involved in public safety who did not contribute to his campaign, will lose their rights.

"You think there might be a connection there?" Maranto said, laughing.
