One subsidy down....

Macon flights to drop $464 per passenger subsidy |

A controversial federal subsidy for airline service from Atlanta to Macon's Middle Georgia Regional Airport will be discontinued, after the sole airline serving the airport said it will fly the route without a subsidy.

The small airline already serving Macon, GeorgiaSkies, has flown between Atlanta and Macon for about two years with a $1.4 million annual federal subsidy that amounted to $464 for each round-trip booked on the route, based on 2009 passenger counts. The airline has been flying the Atlanta-Macon hop with nine-passenger planes that have sometimes been nearly empty.
For those that don't know, by way of interstate it is right at 1 hour from the two airports.

It is actually faster to drive between the two cities than it is to fly.

Just how many more like this are out there?

Re: One subsidy down....

Too many to count, and they all need to get the ax.

Local programs, bridges to nowhere type of things, should be up to the individual state to fund unless an overriding benefit to our overall nation's economic fortunes or security can be shown.

An example of a place where the Feds should spend Federal money to pay for something that occurs mostly in just a few states but would ultimately benefit the entire nation would be border security in TX, AZ, CA, etc...

I'm officially...Stroke-less.
