House Republicans back away from pledge to cut $100 billion from budget

House Republicans back away from pledge to cut $100 billion from budget - The Hill's On The Money

Quote:
House Republicans are backing away from their pledge to cut $100 billion from the federal budget.

GOP aides say Republicans will still look to make significant cuts to spending, but the whole idea of cutting $100 billion was based on the premise that President Obama’s full-year 2011 budget would be enacted.

They say the GOP will remain true to its pledge to try to return non-security discretionary spending to 2008 levels, but that their pledges to reduce the budget by $100 billion do not apply to the budget being developed for the second half of fiscal 2011, which ends Sept. 30.
Anyone surprised? I am not.....and why was it limited to $100b in the first place. We NEED a 50% cut in the budget.

No surprise what-so-ever. Already pedaling, and how long have we had the "new" congress? But "Elect me to save the country"!!! If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable.
I really don't have an idea on what the budget should be, other than it should be a WHOLE LOT LESS.

What a pisspoor joke on us, eh?

Remember the "Contract on/with America"? This could be called "The Pledge on/for America". Ya think?

If their ideas to cut that much were based on Obama enacting his proposed budget...and he didn't...WTF do you expect them to do?

Spending money I don't have on crap I don't need to impress people I don't know.

I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone mentioned that when running for office. I was led to believe a 100 billion cut, was just that.
Let the technicalities begin!!!!

Cut the spending to bring about a balance budget. PERIOD!

During Bush's tenure there was a $400B+ a year deficit and now we are seeing much more. Shouldn't that be where we start? Just cutting the over spending?

I assume you mean we are bankrupt.....I basically agree BUT as long as there are tax revenues there needs to be a balanced budget based upon the receivables.

...and the reason they can't cut $100B from this years' budget is because the budget year will be half over by the time they do get around to finalizing the budget. Even if (if...) they followed through on the promise they would only be able to cut $50B just because of time.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
