AZ voter identification law overturned

You have got to be sh!ttin' me.

Quote:
A six-year-old Arizona law requiring that voters prove their citizenship in order to register to vote was struck down Tuesday.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the portion of the law requiring that voters present identification before casting their ballot, part of a proposition passed in 2004 amid concerns that illegal immigrants may try to vote in state and federal elections.

Opponents of the law argued that it would lead to thousands of residents being turned away at their polling places.

The 2004 ballot proposition required that those registering to vote produce documentation proving citizenship – such as a passport – in order to register to vote. To cast a ballot, registered voters needed to produce either one form of photo identification or two forms of identification without a photo.

The 9th Circuit panel found that the proof of citizenship in order to register conflicted with federal voter registration law.

Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer and Secretary of State Ken Bennett blasted the court's decision Tuesday in a joint statement.

"The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down a simple, common sense protection approved by Arizona voters requiring that all individuals provide evidence of U.S. citizenship prior to registering to vote. This decision is an outrage and a slap in the face to all Arizonans who care about the integrity of their elections," the statement said.

Yeah, I saw that story. I thought about posting it, but I didn't want to hear how it wasn't fair not to let illegals vote. Vote early, Vote often.

Re: AZ voter identification law overturned

The issue is that it conflicts with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, passed by Congress.

The only way to fix it, is to pass a national law that requires actual proof of citizenship to register to vote...............which should be done.

I don't see the need to provide more than regular identification at the polling place............... since you would have to provide proof of citizenship to register. Especially since most polling places are staffed by volunteers.

No need to do it at both places.

.

Never have so many politicians, screwed so many Americans...just to make one black person lose his job.

really? can these volunteers spot a fake id? if they have to prove citizenship when they register it would be harder for someone who isn't supposed to vote do so. sounds like a common sense law to me.

I never even have to show my ID, I offer it out and they say they dont need it. That is BS, they should have licensed officials checking every single person that comes through.

Re: AZ voter identification law overturned

my church serves as the voting place for my neighborhood and the little old ladies wouldn't know a fake id if you told them what it was.

Re: AZ voter identification law overturned

If I had to prove citizenship, it would be a little tough to do. I have no passport. Nothing on my driver liscense proves citizenship. I think I have a certified copy of my Birth Certificate somewhere.
