New Healthcare Bill to cost Cat $100M

Caterpillar: Health care bill would cost it $100M - Chicago Breaking Business

The Wall Street Journal also did a write up about Cat and John Deere stating that they combined will take a $250M hit in new costs from this bill. If you are a subscriber to WSJ, you can read the full article here: Deere, Caterpillar: Health-Care Law to Raise Expenses - WSJ.com

Re: New Healthcare Bill to cost Cat $100M

So how is that possible?

Cat has around 95,000 employees world wide with an estimated 60% outside of the United States.

Caterpillar (click here)
Quote:
Worldwide employment was 94,225 at the end of third quarter 2009. Employment declined by approximately 17,900 from third quarter 2008. Due to restructuring of business operations, the decades since the 1990s have seen the elimination of 20,000 high-wage union jobs in the Peoria, Illinois area, while world-wide employment has increased due to the use of more non-U.S. and nonunion labor.

According to a 2001 article in the Nashville Business Journal, 60% of Caterpillar's employees work outside the United States

The only way that an immediate increase of $100M is even possible, is if they have vast numbers of part-time employees or retirees, who currently do not have health insurance.

With net profits of almost $900M in 2009 alone, they should provide their workers with health insurance.

Nahhhhh...............there's a whole lot more to this story.

Im not 100% sure on all of the details. It was more of a "breaking news" story so it really wasnt explained all that well. It is a little hard to believe because thats a lot of $$. I was under the impression that a lot of CATs workers were Union, which they provide their own healthcare, but maybe I am wrong. We will wait and see what more comes of the story as a day or two passes.

Probably the same thing that is causing ours to go up.

When our company renewed with BCBS in Nov the contract had provisions for mid year rate increase, all of which will be passed to the employees.

Spoken like someone who doesn't have a clue but, tries to hide it from others.

What in the bill will cause a 20% increase in costs for each employee?

If you don't know the answer, it is better to keep your mouth shut and have people just think you're ignorant...........instead of opening it and removing all doubt.

I understand the general rise in health costs but, Cat is saying that it is something specific in this bill that is responsible.

I am just wondering what it is?
